Title: Laptop Interface
Post by: kskreider on March 16, 2004, 11:12:14 AM
OK, made the first step in getting a Sony Vaio PCG-K13...now for an interface.

I think that I can continue to borrow a VX pocket for a little while, but I'd like to move past the 48k realm.  Any insights as to what most folks use?

Consensus says:

Edirol UA-5
M-Audio 410

What about the M-Audio USB Duo?

Priorities for me are bit-for-bit recording/transfers (obviously) and that I'd like to steer clear of powering issues.  It'd be a benefit if it was able to be run independent of the 1394 or USB ports.  (I know that the UA-5 is easy to mod)

+T for any help here as I fumble around

you can also think about the emagic interface (a26)- that runs purely off of your usb port and gives you digi ins.  that tops out at 24/96

UA-5 is not bit perfect for transfers, so that rules it out.

another option is the nuendo multiset or the motu 828- each has their drawbacks.

both are expensive

the multiset is gonna require power

the 828 is going to use firewire

if you only want 2 tracks you can also use the neundo digiset same power issue though

I'd say go for the fw410, but it won't run independent of the computer...

I'd love to run a multiset but I just dropped 1200 beans on a spanky new laptop.  I'm gonna need to ride on Cheapass Railways for a while.

Anyone know where to get an inexpensive 2 channel VX Pocket?  Weren't they going for $199 somewhere a while back?

that 199 deal is over. they're $400.
you can find them from time to time on ebay or here for 250 or less. so y ou may want to wait it out

does the 828 work with windoze yet?  that box is pretty cool, my band used one this last sunday to start recording a demo.  our keyboardist owns one and he brought it over with his mac desktop, pretty sweet!

The A26 can be powered independently of the USB port, actually, with an optional power supply. Not sure how much it costs, Keith, but I've got an A26 (sans power supply) that I'm not using if you want one...

Simp, the 828 has always worked with Windows.
the new 828mkii's can even work standalone(without a computer)
