Title: Recorder to replace JB3
Post by: hhf32 on June 25, 2012, 12:43:37 PM
It's been awhile since I've been on here. Been thinking about replacing my JB3 with a new recorder as the JB3 is getting to be a real PITA when transferring as I don't have windows XP anymore. My current rig is akg461's>edirol ua5>jb3.
I'd like to continue to use the ua5 for phantom power and as a pre, unless the new recorder had just as good Lee's and had phantom power. I'm looking for suggestions to use with my current rig at under $300.
Thanks

The Tascam dr100MKII fits the bill.
Has phantom and good pres according to the users.
It's also under $300.

Thanks NP7. That is one I've found from researching here. Do you know if Dr100mkII works alright with the UA5? Do you know if the Pre's in this are equal too or better than the UA5?

tonedeaf nicely summarized some digi pre's > dr100MKII compatibilities in this thread...

....but the UA-5 wasn't mentioned, yet.

Anyone have any opinions on if the the pre's in the dr-100 mkII are better to are equal to the ones in the UA5?

I don't think tonedeaf would have raved so much about the pre's in the dr-100 if he didn't think so. Maybe he will respond.

I don't think the pre's in an unmodded UA5 are considered all that exceptional compared to what is available today.

Thanks to everyone for your time. I decided to give the dr-100 MkII a shot. I picked one up in the yarsale this afternoon, thanks to JB63.

I would think the Pre's in the DR-100mkii are at least as good as the pre's in the UA5

Replace the JB3?
The Nomad Jukebox 3 is irreplaceable! Such an amazing little machine, the best deck of its kind for about a month. >:D

I recently picked up the dr100mkii, and it seems pretty good.  I'm thinking of continuing to use the JB3 as a backup recorder.  FWIW I think the Busman mod UA5 sounds better than the stock DR100mkii pre's.

I was a big fan of the JB3...  MuleTaper can attest to the power of the JB3...  I sold him my unit after a few years and it ran strong until just recently...

I was also a big fan of the UA5...  The Oade Warm Mod+ I had was a sweet machine...
