Title: DVD Burners
Post by: blu666z on March 17, 2004, 06:25:35 PM
Finally gonna get one of these for archiving.  Any suggestions?  Any specific brands to shy away from?

I have a Sony, it's ok.  I would definitely suggest a Plextor.  I had a Plextor burner and a cd rom and loved them to death...now my brother has them and they still work flawlessly (5+ years).

Dumb question.  Is the file format different between -R and +R or is it just the media.  ie. If I have some +R that will not play on my DVD player, is it possible to rip them and reburn them as -Rs which I know will play?

the files on a dvd are the same, regardless of the format. you can extract the files from your +R dvd and burn them onto a -R dvd.

Seems like I've had more format compatibility problems with +R myself.

This is the one your talking about Scott?  All formats @ 8X for $112...seems like a great deal.

Looks like money well spent on that one.  8x!  Makes me and my 4x jealous.

So you can use +R for archiving and -R for video DVDs.  Let me know if you want to borrow my shows to copy.

+R blanks are more expensive.  I usually get my blanks from americal.com .  YMMV

I currently run a Sony DRU-510.  Previously a Pioneer A03.  Plextor is good, even the Mitsumi's are OK.

I sell Sony's to clients that want high end, and Mitsumi's to everyone else <g>...

I have a Pioneer DVR-AO6 that I love.  Cheap, too.  If the 107 is anywhere near as solid I'd say go for it.
