Title: How's this for a cheap festival rig?
Post by: aberg on March 17, 2004, 06:27:20 PM: I wanna tape some outdoor shows this summer with open taping policies... how do you think this will work out for me as a cost effective rig? I also wanna use the superlux mics for small clubs/bars too. Think this'll do the job?

Superlux SMK-H8Ks (ORTF, 12') > Denecke PS-2 > Hosa MIT-176s > JB3 (.wav @ 44.1 kHz)

Suggest alternatives if you can... thanks.. this board is the best.

Post by: Ed. on March 17, 2004, 06:30:55 PM: superlux are some kickbutt mics for the price...i actually prefer their sound to some other mics that are $1000+ more. however, thats cuz i'm still running them and i can't afford new mics yet. heh

I'm actually thinking of opting for the Art Phantom II power supply which is about half the price of a PS-2.. The only disadvantage is that it's bigger, but I dont' plan on stealthing with this rig. I have mini SP mics for that.

Post by: johnw on March 18, 2004, 12:12:58 PM: Yes that's stock. But honestly the mod doesn't look that hard-It's what I'm planning on doing anyway. But I just realized that you could get a PS-2 for $130 or so. I was thinking it was around 170 - sorry.

I used it for about a year before I stepped up to the UA5, it's a very very clean way to power your mics, but it won't do much in the way of gain, you just have to hope that your Line In will be enough to drive the sound from there. I ran MC012s > PS2 > PCM-M1, worked great.

Post by: RobC on March 19, 2004, 03:58:29 AM: for outdoor festival shows, spend some $$ on a god pair of windscreens, on a windy day cheep mics with good screens are going to make way better tapes than really expensive mics with shitty (or no) wind screens.

Post by: jkoch on April 02, 2004, 10:57:24 PM: make sure you've got enough power for the jb3 since a battery can only get at most about 3 hours...also remember that the first battery slot is hot swappable...
