I currently have a Dr-2d and I'm very happy with it. However, now I need to buy a 2nd recorder for use at work. Originally I planned to purchase another Dr-2r... But now I'm wondering if the Dr-40 is a better value. Most of my recordings will be made directly from the balanced monitor outputs from a Bose L1 speaker PA system. Though less frequently I will use the internal cards or input from a wireless countryman E6 head mic.
One of the biggest features of the Dr-2d, for me, is the ability to record a second track at a lower volume. After reviewing the user manual, it appears the Dr-40 can do the same thing.
Any thoughts? I really like how elegant the Dr-2d looks, but it appears the Dr-40 does everything the the Dr-2d does and more....

After more searching, I've found only one big limitation. I don't think you can record from both the external mic's and the line in at the same time. Four channel recording has to include the internal mics. That would be a deal breaker for my home use, but I don't anticipate needing that feature at work.

Correct, there is only one input, the XLR combo jacks that can be line/mic/mic with P48. It's a great little box, I just got one to run behind my MixPre. I get about 16 hours record time from Energizer lithiums going line-in with zero gain on the deck, 24/96.

Yep, on the DR-40 2 of the channels MUST be from the stereo internal mics. My friend Pridix found out that after he'd bought the recorder :(

I have to tell you I love My DR-40... those internal mics are decent... you can set the delay for channel 1 (int mics) vs channel 2 (xlrs)... battery life is all night... for 150$ a steal

As much as I like delaying one channel for solo voice, it's something I can do on post. I haven't used the DR-40 so I can't speak for the the internal mics, but I can say the Dr-2d's are pretty good and they are also cards rather than Omni's. I like the robust XLR inputs on the Dr-40, I also like the portability of the Dr-2d.
To make a long story short, I purchased a 2nd Dr-2d for $150.
