This is probably going to be off in the distant future, but I'm wondering what would be a good, small, fairly inexpensive power/A/D module. Price is probably the most important factor, but I'd love to hear any advice you have :).

AD-20. Done.
-
i know you know that I know that you know that the ad-20 doesn't provide power ;)
but with the CMC-8s perhaps you'll have a battery box instead. regardless, I recommend the mp-2
-
I might but I'd obviously rather have as few boxes as possible. An mp-2 would provide power for them then?
-
the mp-2 provides phantom power, just like the ua-5.
however, the stock SP mics do not accept phantom power. There are options 3 fold.
1) get the $100 upgrade from SP for the power adapters. This provides modules so the mics can plug into the mp-2, ua-5, etc. looks like this (http://www.soundprofessionals.com/images/gold/full/SP-CMC-4-Z.jpg)
2) do this mod yourself. Leegeddy and Hoyt from the boards have both done it, except they used mini-xlr connectors in place of the 1/8" connectors. (http://www.taperssection.com/yabbse/index.php?board=3;action=display;threadid=15247)
3) buy the ES943 (SP-CMC-8) (http://audio-technica.com/prodpro/profiles/ES943_C.html) mics from someone other than Sound Professionals. They will come with in-line XLR power adapters. You just won't have the option of switching between phantom and battery power like you do with the previous 2 options, unless you go with the AT853a which are similar but not the same. The AT853a (http://audio-technica.com/prodpro/profiles/AT853a.html) mics have the option of battery or phantom power, and they have interchangable caps, but are a little wider. The AT853Rx (http://audio-technica.com/prodpro/profiles/AT853Rx.html) mics are also a good option if you want interchangable caps and know you will only want to provide phantom power.

Wait, what the hell does he need phantom for?
-
mod sbm1
would the pre in the sbm1 power these? if so you could get the "24 bit mod" and the pre mod
really small all in one box with a great a/d stage, but the pre is disabled with only the 24 bit mod

He said he wants "as few boxes as possible." Battery box + AD-20 is 2. Plus, 48V phantom powered mics sound better. Atleast the sp-cmc-4s do.
dustin - no, the sbm-1 doesn't provide power.

Duh, that's why SP sells an AD-20-MINI that has an extra 9V battery plus a 1/8" input. It works great. That way you don't have to F around with 48V phantom, especially if you are going to stealth. End of topic :)

you must remember that any phantom power mod will increase the performance of the mics. The SPL of the mic is increased by 13 db, and the dynamic range increases by 13 db as well.

Why even use a modded sbm1? I would think that stock would be perfect. It'll power the mics (the sbm1 provides plug-in power, unless I'm absolutely retarded), and has a decent preamp +A/D. Or get the pre-mod for it, but not the "24-bit mod" so the pre is still active.
Or is that what you were saying, and I'm just retarded?
I always thought the sbm1 would be a great companion to a JB3. Except for that 7pin->optical cable. But the price for used SBM's seems to be coming down a bit, so it's a feasible option..
Schwilly, the mp2's just a straight pre + phantom, right? I like the sound of the mp2, but think he might be better off with an external A/D like the AD-20 or sbm1.

Here's a vote for the modAD-20. I own one, but not the one SP sells. Much better than running a battery box > preamp > recorder. ;)

While the SBM-1 provides plug-in power through the mic pre inputs, plug-in power isn't enough to power the SP-CMC-8 mics. I forget the actual voltage of the Sony plug-in power, but it's too low. Something like 1.5v or some such, but don't remember exactly.

yer right ska.
john, whats this modAD-20? Does it provide phantom?

Nah, it has a mini plug input and an extra battery slot, providing battery power to mics the SP at933s I have. See attached.

i scheee

that mod ad20 is nice!
-
it cost more though. :( I'm thinking of modding mt sp-cmc-2's...

I know that the A/D in the JB3 isn't the greatest, but I still think the MP2 analog into the JB3 will sound better than the AD20. I haven't ran an AD20, but have ran the MP2>JB3 setup a few times and have been happy with the results. I've never been very impressed with the AD20.

Not when you buy used. ;D

i'm lost

I'm not sure anyone can help you with that, Schwill. ;D

I have all the stuff to do that ad-20 mod, but I was going to run the power from the main power and use my Makita battery to power it. But then I changed my mind and decided to pick up a ps-2, samson adaptors and those mini xlr connectors to do my own phantom mod. I haven't jumped in yet because I'm still waiting on the adaptors. I'm also going to build a mini xlr to mini for using the BB when I want to have as little stuff as possible.

Agreed. The mp2 has a much better sound as a preamp than the AD-20. I think the solution is mp2->mod SBM1->JB3. Problem solved :)

Not sure if ye olde MP-2 > modSBM-1 > whatever-the-hell 7pin/optical cable is the cheapest option...

Except you'd have to go mp2 > modSBM-1 > optical converter > JB3. That's quite a bit of gear, especially since a modSBM-1 goes for over $500 (way too much for what it is, IMNSHO). You'd have to spend over a grand to get all that gear. Whereas a modAD-20 is about $300 used ($400 new).
I think the AD-20 is a great all-in-one box, especially if it's modded to power the mics...

what's wrong with the jb3 a/d?

what's wrong with the jb3 a/d?
Been known to pick up hard drive noise.

No, the A/D is pretty clean. It's the preamp stages that pickup the HD noise. If you feed the A/D a line-level signal, you won't notice anything. At least I never had a problem all the times I used it. Skalinder did a test of the JB3 A/D vs that of a D7 or D8, didn't he? And they were pretty comparable?

NJB3 v. D100. I can re-post the BT if there's interest (assuming I still have it lying around somewhere).

Was there a post about the njb3 analog input(a/d???)I cant find it

It's on what was supposed to be the Godsmack tape. I think Schwilly and I were being idiots on it the day before the show.

Yes, you are search-challenged, aren't you, Hoobash? :P
ADC comp: NJB3 v. D100 (http://www.taperssection.com/yabbse/index.php?board=23;action=display;threadid=14574)
Like a dumb-ass, looks like I don't have the torrent anymore, but I do have the WAV files. I can re-torrent, FTP, or snail mail FLAC or audio if you're bandwidth challenged. Total WAV size is about 60MB for the two files. Lemme know if you (or anyone else for that matter) want it.
-
Only here. I dont really want to do the search engine thing again

Just some light-hearted needling, Hoobash, don't want to get back into that whole thing again, either. You want a copy of the comp?

I'm sorry if this is the only place I post, but I swear by the SP AT mics as being the best value for under $500... hehe
To go the whole 9 yards with phantom power....
If you have an existing set of CMC-8's, you can send them back to SP and have them upgraded to have XLR connectors for 79 bucks, or upgraded to have the adapter kit (9V/48V) for 120 bucks.
In conjunction, SP is also selling:
-a modded Denecke PS2 48V supply, with a 1/8" output to plug directly into a DAT or MD line-in jack. 200 bucks
But if you want a good A/D to hook up to this setup, then get the regular PS2 for 150 bucks, a pair of XLR male > female connectors, and then the regular Denecke AD-20.
That would be about 500 bucks, buying the mod, A/D and power supply.

no doubt, you can even get interchangable caos
