Title: UA5 into M10??
Post by: Onefish on September 09, 2012, 11:30:25 AM
Am I right in thinking that I would have to run the UA5 analog/ RCA out to 1/8 mini?

Yes - it works great.

Thanks Vanark, That's what I thought

If memory serves, the only gotcha on that is that there is no true analog path through the UA-5, so you will going A-D-A-D to the M10.

Which is a technical issue, not a sonic one.

An extra conversion translates to something that does effect it sonically. Although I do agree with you vanark, it sounds just fine, I've run like this to my LS-10 many times.

1/4" or RCA's on UA-5 > 1/8" mini

I run a dual RCA > 1/8" mini jack out of the back of my UA-5 into my R-09. Works great.

Consider the fact that you have 3 sets of gain knobs... you don't want to max one, min the other, and end up overloading one of the intermediate stages.

I suggest the following, other opinions welcome:
- setting the M10 to mid-range (5).
- set the L/R gain on the UA-5 so you get the occasional blip on the red light, or just set them to 2 o'clock
- adjust the headphone jack volume control to bring the M10 gain the way you want them.
- there is a little red light on the UA-5, not the phantom power one, the other one... ideally you would turn that off, it's said to reduce the amount of circuitry the signal has to go through.

FYI, I don't know if people realize this but you can do standalone analog out recording with a STOCK UA-5.  You need digimod to get digi-out without a computer, but a stock one will put out an analog signal.  I've done it.

This fact seems to suggest that there may be no A>D D>A conversion to go analog out, contrary to the diagram on the cover. Still, I'd venture to guess that the A>D converter in the UA5 is better than the one in the M10, owing to there being more space to accomplish it but then the M10 is a newer unit and might have newer and/or better technology. Still I doubt that any but the goldenest of ears could tell the difference between UA5> M10 analog and UA5> Bit Bucket.
