I have taken off the cover, but have no clue how to get it out. Any suggestions.

I used to know how to do this from using them more often....
You took off the cover, that's step 1.
Next I would turn off all the power and watch what the wheels do. Sometimes that is enough.
You just want to make sure you don't break the tape. You *can* fix a broken tape, but its easier if you don't have to.
When you power on, the arms pull the tape out and hold it against the heads. You have to figure out what's not happening and why (or why not), if its catching on anything, and then figure out what to do free the tape.
Does any of that really help?

After carefully fiddling with it the tape halfway ejected. I pulled on it enough to break the tape which thankfully had been captured. I just hope I did not damage anything in the process. I am almost scared to put another tape in, but I am going to anyway. Thanks for all you help jb.

Find an expendable one first!
I've used alcohol and q-tips to clean the heads before, and I know you can do that easily while its open.
You need to make sure there isn't anything that's going to just catch every tape, though.
Weed through the older archived site and find some input about this.
It's common enough that there should be better info than my 2 comments before you go at it again!
