I updated and ran with the new firmware on Wed (using line level on 2 channels) and it was nice to be able to slightly adjust the gain.

Can someone tell me the procedure for getting the new firmware?  Is it relatively simple or a real pain in the butt?

Its super easy. download this link
http://tascam.com/content/downloads/products/91/hs-p82.120.zip
after unzipping it, transfer it to your compact flash card, insert card in p82, power it up while holding PAUSE and REC down. this will show you the new firmware which is 1.2, you select the one you want and hit YES. After it is done updating it will power down on its own. When you boot it back up you can check the firmware in SYSTEM VERSION in the menu.
