(I got lucky and local NZ/Aus Sony distributor wanted to move the PCM stock (are they discontinuing these??) off and gave me great deal...)
I've got a MixPre-D in front with digital AES output..
I've done some research and found a Hosa ODL-312 adapter that could potentially do the trick for digital optical in.. I've got the POC-10B cable already..
I certainly do not want to invest for that XLR1 interface that only does analog minijack in as I've got plenty of those already and the fact that MixPre-D has the tape out...
Any other options? 48kHz/24bit is a must.. I don't care that much about 96kHz on that configuration but 24bit is something I want..
Cheers

This will probably not work as the d50 wants an exact formatted Spdif signal and aes is not the same. The hosa will convert the physical interface but does not change the framing.
The SD usbpre2 or a grace optimod V3 (w/ the firmware upgrade) should work though

You may be able to get it to work at 44.1k though as some have reported with the tascam dr100mkii and mixpre-d

You are correct Richard. I had a d50 (for a short time until I verfied I couldn't use the digital input) along with this same HOSA box...the d50 wouldn't synch with any of the AES or SPDIF signals sent from my mini-me through the HOSA into the d50 optical input.
I've also read that the USBPre2 and the Optimod V3 work, although I do believe the V3 upgrade requires a replacement chip, so technically that would be a hardware upgrade. In either of those cases, the HOSA box would not be necessary.
I'm pretty sure I made a post of my findings...I can't remember with 100% certainty, but I'm pretty sure I did get synch at 16/44.1, but I'm a 24bit guy through and through so that finding didn't add anything for me.

Yep, it's my understanding as well that the MixPre-D will not provided a useable 24-bit optical signal to the D50, as the D50 wants spdif and the MixPre-D sends AES. It should work at 16-bit.
I owned an optimod V3 for years and used it with my D50, works fine, including at 24bit. Tonedeaf is right that the V3 may need a replacement chip, though technically this is a firmware change and not a hardware upgrade. At any rate, Grace will do it for free for you if you send it in, or will provide the chip if you want to do it yourself -- which is quite easy. (As an aside, this is a firmware upgrade for the V3 since Grace advertises the V3 as having a spdif out and when they found out they weren't properly formatting a spdif signal, they provided a free firmware upgrade. Many other A/D manufacturers, including very high end ones, will market their A/D's as having spdif out, when they in fact they know full well they only provide AES-formatted outputs. Good luck getting a refund when you find out your AES A/D doesn't work with your spdif recorder, or getting them to address the problem like Grace did. Grace is an A-number-1 class act all the way.)
I recently purchased a SD USBPre 2, and it also works fine with the optical input of the D50, even at 24bits. The USBPre 2 also has an optical output, so you wouldn't need a format converter. If the D50 is to be the main or only recorder you use, you might consider selling the MixPre and picking up a USBPre 2.

though technically this is a firmware change and not a hardware upgrade.
The main point I was trying to convey to the OP was that this upgrade can't be obtained through a digital download.

The MixPre-D is a nice featured and sounding Mixer/Mic-Pre, the Marantz PMD661 is compatible with MixPre-D, I use my own impedance matched conversion cable. (http://taperssection.com/index.php?topic=7676.msg1965909#msg1965909) Can't help you with a sony m10 though, if you want to connect digitally you're probably better off using a different recorder or preamp.
