Title: Roland R-05 corrupting songs on SD card?
Post by: rolandr05 on October 31, 2012, 07:56:13 AM
Globally I'm happy with this unit although I'm still practicing.

I just discovered that by deleting folders containing recordings (from within the R-05 menu) then other songs saved in different folders become corrupted.

Please check the screenshot.

Has anyone ever had this problem? Is it a known bug or a faulty unit?

I've never had any corrupt files with the R-05 (even when running out of battery while recording, files get closed correctly and are usable)... but I have to say that never work with the files on the proper unit, and always take out the SD card and work with the files on the computer instead - so I can't say if this is a general problem or only yours.

Nevertheless, try to export those suspicious/corrupt files to a computer and check them with some specific software (http://www.sounddevices.com/products/waveagent/ if you were recording in WAV or http://www.free-codecs.com/download/mp3_repair_tool.htm if you were recording in MP3). Also try to import them in Audacity in RAW format, that can help with corrupt files.

Thanks LikeASong, I too prefer taking the card out and work on computer it's faster.
The problem happened after I deleted the folders on the card from the R-05 menu then I went back to display other folders and they all resulted corrupted.

I'll attempt the same tasks again then I check the card on computer and see what I can find there.
That was a very useful tip :)

FWIW, I have never deleted a folder or a file on this deck (or any other for that matter) I just reformat after I have moved the files to my PC, and feel certain my transfer has no hiccups. With the file and root structure being different on every deck, reformatting seems much easier and safer. Some decks have very long slow reformats, so in that case I do the quick reformat. On my R-05 I use a cheapo 16gb polaroid SD card and have reformatted it over 100 times. I've never had a single problem.

Similar experience here. I've never deleted stuff using the deck, and never had a problem like this.

I have deleted files off the SD card using the option on the R-05 and haven't run into this issue.

At the risk of stating the obvious, have you been formatting the SD card with the R-05?  If you have not and have been formatting the card with your computer and then just inserting it and using it in the deck, you're opening the door for all sorts of potential issues with it.  You MUST insert the card into the R-05 and then format it with that option on the recorder.  That's standard practice for all decks with removable digital media and the best way to minimize issues like the one you're describing.  Good luck.

Change your user name as the r-05 does not like blasphemy :)

Then how do you delete it or you never delete it all?

Yes that was the first thing I did from the deck even before reading the manual so that I lost its bundled content!

I like the R-05, it's a nice tool and very easy to use not to mention I'm satisfied with the quality of its microphones also I'm still running on its stock alkaline batteries I dunno how many hours I recorded!
You can carry this unit and make semi-pro jobs without having to bring external mics, preamps etc .etc...
BTW, I can't change my user name, it took me too much effort and time to make one!  ;D

I never used it as a player, so you may very well be correct. It might be worth contacting Roland about this to see if it is an issue or perhaps a known issue. I cannot recall if there has been a firmware update on the deck at all. I only use it to record and I listen to the recording through my car system on the way home. That is the full extent of my listening experience, so you may want to dig further.

I think most of us work with the SD card directly plugged into our computers, and delete/copy files from there (avoiding working with the unit).
