Title: Need Help fixing a buzz from an excellent Leonard Cohen Master.
Post by: luvsufo on December 23, 2012, 10:48:01 AM
I recorded Leonard at Barclay's Center on Thursday night. Last show of the current
tour.7th Row from stage on floor slightly left of center for set1 and 3 rows further back for set 2.
I was using a Sony PCM10 with CA-14 Mics. Came out really nice but there is a
slightly annoying buzz coming out of the left channel. It sounds like the type of buzz coming from a guitar amp on stage or a 60 cycle type hum from a stereo amplifier
from the 70s or 80s.You can hear it pretty good with headphones on and also through
speakers if you are near them.it might not be as noticable if further away from speakers or listening outside in your yard.I listened to my other recently recorded shows and they
all seem ok.Also,i think the pitch of the noise changes a little during the show.in the louder parts its less noticeable but heard clearly on the soft parts.

Heres some clues maybe: the overall sound was way quieter than your normal rock show and i could not get a strong level turning the recording level all the way up so i turned the
mic sensitivity to high from low and got a stronger level but probably had the recording level turned up way higher than I normally would.I was using mic input like always.
I think i had my cellphone in a pocket below the mic. It did not ring or anything and i think
i usually have it there for other shows with no problems.

I was wondering if someone could fix this for me with some type of equilization or maybe use the one good channel to make two track mono.
I would prefer option 1 but never had this problem before and have no clue how to correct this.
No other recordings of this show have turned up so far so i am hoping to fix this as it was an excellent performance.
Thanks in advance to anyone who could help out.

Any chance you can post a sample of the issue?  If some of us can actually hear it, we might be able to offer a better opinion on how to proceed.

A buzz on the left channel only leads me to think that it's not anything on-stage that caused the buzz/hum but rather a grounding issue with the mic on the specific channel (sometimes the mini-jack connector opens up and presses on the internals causing this to happen especially when the gear is in a pocket).  I had something happen to me on two different occasions.  One of them was due to a loose connection on the inside of the plug and the other was because I'd (somehow) managed to loosen the top part of tha jack and caused hum (at first) and then intermittent channel loss.
