What's the consensus on this? In the DR-2d thread I saw someone mention using the USB so as not to damage the flap that protects the SD slot. I have never used USB to transfer from my Tascams. I always just put the SD straight into my laptop OR if it is a microSD I use the adapter that came with the card. My reasoning is - Why introduce another element(the USB cable) that may potentially cause problems if it was deficient in some way? Same reason I would not put a microSD in an adapter with a recorder that takes SD. Am I overanalyzing this?
It really bothered me when someone added in their etree source of one of my shows " > USB > PC >" when it was NOT the case...

I use a microSD > CFCard adapter in my HD-P2 and have never ahd an issue... I pull the MicroSD out and use a card reader...
Since (I'm guessing) that it is computer data that it will have some sort of error-check...

I've done it both ways. I used the cable when I had a 722 because getting the card in and out was a pain with the portabrace and as long as you connected everything cold it was ok.
With my D50, I've connected it via USB and I've pulled the card.

I think you're overanalyzing it. Unless you have a very defficient cable (aka really cheap Chinese cables), the digital signal from the recorder to the SD will be perfectly ok. Moreover, the only actual problems I've ever had with SD cards were them being stuck or broken at the recorder's/camera's SD plug, so I try not to take the cards out when I can. Just my $0'02 :)

At least with the stuff I have, the transfer is considerably faster if I pull the card. When I got my first DR-2d I was a bit wary of the hinge that held the SD card cover. A year later now, having recorded a lot with two of these units, I have no fear of breaking it. I think it would take some effort and carelessness to do so. I always remove the card to transfer files to pc.

I always just plug the recorder in via USB and it always works fine. I also have used microSD cards in the DR2d in their adapter with no issue.

I go USB, I'd rather put the wear on that instead of the card and contacts. And it's easier. I always listen back to the whole recording before deleting/reformatting the card so if there ever comes a time when the transfer screws up, I can go back and recover the file.

Though, if I had a complaint about the r44 it is getting the damn card out; I always figured it was the fault of my big fingers...

Yep, transfer speeds are usually quick going directly card>card reader... But I'd rather spend 50 more seconds waiting for the files to transfer than put any extra pressure over the SD card and recorder internal stuff.

M10: USB cable....leave card alone
HD-p2: Use Firewire cable....leave card alone
Never an issue with either.

I used to use USB and still do with the M10, but otherwise I just pull the card. Slow as molasses to use USB vs. a card reader, esp if your machine has a built in card reader.

For my decks that use CF and SD cards I always pull the card and put it directly in the reader, it is much faster. There is even more difference now now that the cards are getting bigger and bigger, which seems to amplify the difference between the slower in deck method versus direct card in reader method. I have never seen any wear or tear on any of the cards as a result of sliding them in or out of the deck. On CF cards, a small amount of care is exercized due to the little pins involved, but again, I have never had a single issue. For the one deck I have that uses SDmicro, I use the USB cable as like others I dont like dealing with the little card.

I found [SDHC > Computer], the quickest and easiest and don't have to deal with a mini USB connection which I believe to be a flimsy designed for regular use.
