Title: Need a small stand for stage-lip taping.
Post by: chinariderstl on February 23, 2013, 10:30:30 AM
Hi, I need a small stand for acoustic stage-lip-esque taping, i.e.: right up front.  Any thoughts on this, before I pull the trigger?  Seems to be about what I need.

# Manfrotto 5001B Nano Black Light Stand - 6.2' (1.9m)

I think this is what they now call what we all know as the 3373.

Sooo... Good? Bad? Indifferent?  Seems pretty right on to me.

I have a couple of these:

Some bands and sound guys seem to appreciate the smaller base. I usually gaff it down if I'm worried that someone might bump it.

I think ideally, I'd prefer the drum base like the one Bryonsos linked but without the boom arm.

I've got one of these that works just fine, and the price is right.  Didn't look hard enough to find a listing with just one.

I use a round base table stand. not as tall as a kick drum stand, works well for split omnis. Stable with two SDC on a stereo bar.

I have been using a pair of these for splitting omnis on-stage:  http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/505123-REG/K_M_25950_500_55_25950_Low_Level_Microphone.html (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/505123-REG/K_M_25950_500_55_25950_Low_Level_Microphone.html).  They can be used without the pictured boom for a height of  ~12" with a mic clip attached.  Considerably higher with the boom.  The build quality is excellent.  The only drawback is that they are quite heavy.

I actually bought the K&Ms because I needed something fast and the Manfrottos I had already purchased were back-ordered (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/325266-REG/Bogen_Manfrotto_012B_Backlight_Stand_with_Extension.html (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/325266-REG/Bogen_Manfrotto_012B_Backlight_Stand_with_Extension.html)).  I never cancelled the order, so I have those too.  I have used them a few times and think they are good as well.  Not so solid as the K&Ms and with a bigger footprint.  They are more compact, though, and much lighter.  Another plus is that the extension bar can also be used with a Super Clamp...

I have two 5001b stands, one had the normal setup and the other has legs that are half the size. The smaller one has a max height that is about 18" less, but I can use it onstage rather easily. I can post pics when I get home. Got it custom cut from my rep at pro-sound.

I have a 6' Bogen/manfrotto fob stand that works great for stage lip/onstage taping!

I use an old-school 3373 (replaced by the Bogen Nano) and chopped the legs in half to reduce the footprint for FOB/stage-lip/onstage.

I'd like to get a 2nd 3373/Nano and not chop the legs for certain situations but can't justify the cost yet.

I've seen some sweet, sub-4' light-stands on-stage recently that have a very small footprint. Maybe 12"-14".

Damn you, OP for having me think about multi-track possibilities...

I use the same with a Shure vertical stereo mount A27M. Great combination!
