Once again Im amazed at the quality of a $200 setup vs. a 4k setup! The ca14 omnis sound better than the mk41 source for Pimps Of Joytime, at least IMO 8)

Nice selection Bean! This would be a good sampler for anyone thinking of purachasing Church's equipment. Nothing is lost. The POJ show is testament.

Im gonna differ.  While i've always said the ca14 offer a terrific value, id choose the schoeps PJT source hands down...no contest.  Drum kit on the ca14 source is tinny and trebly...schoeps source retains the dynamics, especially on the kick and overall has better balance and detail.  If you like low end though, the ca14 always delivers, especially compared to other mics in its price range.

it's always good to hear comps (even if just for anecdotal evidence).  in the sub $200 category the CA-14s are a very good solution, but they don't hold a candle to anything Schoeps.

the "casual" listener probably couldn't tell a lot of difference between the Schoeps and CA-14 sources and might wonder why the Schoeps are so much more expensive.  but to my ears (and i'm sure to the ears of most "sophisticated" listeners) the difference is night and day.

I listened to Consider the Source (un-ironically) and found that the Schoeps were obviously just much deeper and richer.  The CA's sound hollow and thin in comparison.

That being said, what was the height of your stand for the Schoeps, and how far are you from the ceiling of the venue?   I get a claustrophobic feel to that recording, which is my way of describing ceiling reflections.

For 2/6 and 2/8 I was FOB/DFC at 10' high exactly. 2/22 I was very close to the ceiling FWIW

Thanks a lot, mr. Bean, it was very interesting. I've done a blind test with Pimps Of Joytime recording and in my $200 headphones the difference is not obvious. I liked the shoeps source more though. Schoeps give more detail and overall frequency balance is great - sound is so natural. I must say that schoeps recordings are usually my favourite to listen. I probably shall get myself a pair when I get rich.  ;) For now I'm cool with CA-14.

This. I don't think anyone would argue that the schoeps aren't better mics. I'd like to have a Porsche also, but for now i'll take my VW. I don't think that makes me any less of a "serious" driver.  :P

This is starting to sound more like a support group than actual discussion of differences between the mics.
Title: little box preamp can't be used w/ CA14?
Post by: kenyee on March 07, 2013, 05:49:41 PM
Not sure if that's one other difference we're hearing.

The MK41 has more bass and more of a 3D soundstage.
The CA14 sounds more tinny and flat.

If you could hook the CA14 to the LittleBox, it's take the preamp out of it...

Dopapod
CA-14 Source

Schoeps mk4/Soundboard

Not exactly the same, but a schoeps comp non the less.  CA-9200 this time.

Not exactly the same, but a schoeps comp non the less.  CA-9200 this time.

Volumes of two recordings are also different.  Generally, if you make something sound louder, people like it more because they hear more (unless the output it crap of course).
I hear almost the same thing as before but less of a difference.  The CA-14 sounds less tinny and a bit more 3D than the previous comparison.  The Mk4 sounds like it has more bass and is more 3D than the CA-14.  The CA-14 also sounds more forward (closer to the instruments).

There's no way to swap in the CA-14 w/ the same preamp as the Schoeps via XLR adapters?

Agreed Invalid,  but to the point, We were not sharing a stand, I was a 10 feet to the left.

Ca-14 > CA-9200 > Panasonic C24 = $300

choeps MK4>KC5>CMC6>Sonosax SX-M2>Apogee Mini-me(aes out,24bit/96khz)>COAX>Edirol R-44 & Soundboard>R-44 = ? $10,000

In true slutty fashion I have moved on from the CA-14's to KM140's   so there you go.
