Title: newbie mounting bar question
Post by: SBW on March 02, 2013, 11:55:00 AM
Pardon my ignorance, but wtf is a kwon and/or nola bar?  My google-fu just keeps pointing back to taperssection.com conversations about how great kwon bars are!!!

Thx

They're high quality plastic (delrin) mounting bars for active mic solutions.  NOLA bars took the KWON bar design and expanded on it.  I believe KWON made bars for Schoeps and Neumann, while NOLA bars were basically for Schoeps actives but also turned out to fit the Busman BSC2 and certain DPA lemo styles.

NOLA bars are no longer being made:

Apparently KWON still has bars, maybe someone can chime in with his email.

Ok, another stupid question:  is NOLA and kwon the name of a company or something?  Where do you buy these things?

ohhh, wait a sec - or is kwon / nola the handle of someone in the forums?  And these things are hand made?

They're not available commercially.  They're both made my tapers for the community.  NOLA bars were made by TS member NOLAfishwater (see link above), New Orleans resident, hence the name, and KWON were made by Robert Kwon.

ETA:  Members of the community with access to machine shops that can make these designs.  NOLA and KWON draw the schematics then send those to a shop to be made.

Ahh, thank you - that makes sense.   Has either of the designs ever been posted?  i.e. under a creative commons license or something?  AKA open hardware?

And just FWIW, and to clear facts, KWON made [3] MBHO active bars. [DINa/DIN/NOS]. I knew when I sold them 2 years ago Id NEVER see them again. Also, schoeps makes a ORTF Bar specifically for the schoeps ;) I dont believe KWON ever did, and I know Louie[NOLA] used to make them but theyre long gone :)
