Title: Schoeps MK*>KCY>Naiant PFA>Tascam DR-100MKII--Whatya Think?
Post by: gormenghast on March 12, 2013, 09:25:28 PM
Whatya think about running Schoeps MK*>KCY>Naiant PFA>Tascam DR 100MKII?  How is the preamp in the Tascam?  How would this compare to Schoeps MK*>KCY>TB Transformer Output>M10?  The Tascam with the PFA's sure makes for even smaller rig.

I'd actually bet the tinybox > M10 would make for a smaller footprint than the tascam.  The PFAs would be full size XLRs coming out of the bottom of the Tascam.  The M10/tinybox together probably wouldn't be much wider than the Tascam and definitely shorter.  The tinybox is smaller than a pack of cigarettes.

I have all the schoeps gear and the TB and M10.  I'm not aware of the size of the Tascam.  I was looking into the other thread about the RCA SPDIF input and saw something about the Tascam, so googled it and saw it has XLR inputs for line or mic.  Got me to thinking and wondering.

Are you just thinking about getting as small as possible?  The all in on may be more convenient on some levels, but don't think you're going to get more quality and smaller than the M10 and TB.  Maybe the sonosax or something, but thats a whole different beast.

I just went off Google images for reference of size.  Below gives some idea (also boobs  :P).  Then add about ~2 inch XLR PFAs to the bottom of that.

Since the Op is wondering about size, is it just me or does one look a lot bigger than the other? :P

I think that's a great idea - the KCY PFA, if made properly, seems to be pretty reliable (I run one frequently).  Personally, I would prefer to have a choice of preamps to use and/or have one less box, than using the tinybox.  I have both options available to me, and I generally prefer using the KCY PFA.

I run mk41>KCY>LB[OT]>M10 and COULD NOT BE ANY HAPPIER. Super HQ rig and super small footprint :)

It's an awesome rig I agree.  I'm just thinking about another setup.  I did read that 20 page thread about the Tascam DR 100 MKII, and did buy one yesterday.  I have another plan to use it to transfer DATs, so I like that it has a SPDIF digital input.  I have some uncirculated String Cheese Incident DATs taped  >:D

Me too, but mine are now plagued with digi-noise for some reason :(
