Title: Schoeps ahoy (but which ones?)
Post by: Duncan on April 10, 2013, 05:44:13 AM
So I'm moving steadily towards getting some Schoeps with some of these custom cables I've been reading good thinks about

Thought I've check out the prices here in Europe (assuming they would be twice as much as over in the land of plenty (USA)

To my amazement they are not!

I thought I'd go for the safe and popular (and a bit cheaper) MK4s which I can get for a bit under £1000 ($1500) for a matched pair
Then I saw on the same site MK5s (not matched) for just under £1300 a pair

That seems like a tempting bit of extra versatility for the extra £300

So my question to you good and knowledgeable folk is which you would go for? MK4s (matched), MK5s (not matched), a different Schoep cap, a different make of cap

Anybody got any words of warning/advice about the cables?

They will be enjoying mostly loud rock music and will be hiding about my person

I'll ask about the merits of stack v FOB with this new set when I get them unless someone is as bored at work as I am today and wants to hold forth on that topic

Thanks as always for your input

Duncan

I too just moved into the wonderful world of Schoeps and my choice was
MK5 caps for versatility & the MK41 Caps for the rest.

I have used the MK41 for Eric Clapton - half way back in a arena & they smoked
and I have used the MK5 Cards & Omnis up close and again they both sound great!

I use the Niaiant Tinybox-Following Bob custom cables-M10
100% Steal >:D with mics secures in a cap.

Small set up with a big sound!

schoeps has very tight tolerances, so I wouldn't worry too much about buying a non-matched pair as long as they are about the same age. Any small level differences can be fixed in post.

the mk5 has a slight HF bump which is probably helpful for PA recording in most cases. That you then get two pattern for one is icing on the cake.

Don't sweat the matched vs unmatched dilemma. Schoeps manufacturing is close tolerance. (I even have a Nextel-grey MK8 capsule that matches well acoustically with a chrome-cased MK8 that I picked up a year later.)

The MK5 is good value. A colleague's MK5 - that he bought as a matched pair for a small additional charge - sounds in cardioid mode much the same as my MK4, and in omni mode, pretty close to my MK2S. I have no experience, though, about deploying them in rock concert venues.

But will I ever use both the settings on the MK5?
Do many people on here use Schoeps Omni?
It seems to me that the bulk use Cards or even Hypers

I'm not worried about matched as my DPAs were supposed to be matched but don't seem to be can be sorted out in post as someone said

Cheers

Go for the mk4/mk41 if you never use omnis
