Title: Doing double-system with Tascam DR-60D
Post by: Carlos E. Martinez on April 10, 2013, 03:10:26 PM
Tascam has just released a 4-channel new model, the DR-60D, and it got me thinking on doing time-code double system sound with it.

There are other 4-channel models on the market, like the one by Zoom, but this one can be screwed on the base of a DSLR or video camera.

The idea is to feed the TC signal onto one Tascam track and on the DSLR audio track. If I shoot with another camera I would send the TC code by wireless mic.

Would this work? Has anyone tried something similar?

There's already a thread on this device running at http://taperssection.com/index.php?topic=161501.0 - I'm not sure we need another.

Have you read on the particular application I am talking about?

I'm talking of using that Tascam to do double system audio using a timecode generator, recording the TC signal on one of the channels.

That other thread is just about the Tascam release, but not implementing it as I would like to.

Typically here each device has a thread in which all questions related to it are posted, but whatever.  Your question is actually not really related to the DR-60D as such, as any recorder with more than two channels would do the job equally well in terms of recording stereo sound plus timecode as audio on a third track  (though as you say, this particular recorder is camera-mountable).

http://taperssection.com/index.php?topic=152175.0 might be relevant (in parts)
or
http://endlesspicnic.com/blog/2011/11/time-code-canon-5d/#more-1982 might also assist.

But PluralEyes seems to be the way to go.

Thanks for your suggestions.

PluralEyes is a Mac program, running with FCP, and I have no use for either of them. Mine is a PC, and I use Avid MC.

The Horita TC generator is the one to go for. Cheap enough to buy two of them, or at least one for each camera.

And yes, my question is indirectly related to the new Tascam, but generic for the application I'm talking about.

Not that I have anything to add to the OP's question, but I will say that though this seems to happen here a lot, I think it is bad practice.  Having all the information about a single recorder in four 25-page threads makes finding specific information difficult.  TS.com search engine isn't always so great, so I find it helpful to have more separate threads on separate topics, and not just assume that a recorder is mentioned that all things potentially related to it must go in those threads.

Having a single thread to introduce a new recorder and it's features works fine, but keeping all potential applications to that recorder becomes difficult to navigate IME.

Anyway, carry on.....

As you may guess, those are my words too. ;)

Well, that's true.  On a site I visit which discusses phone/tablets etc, they often have 'anticipation' threads (where to buy, whether orders have been delivered, clarification of features) and separate 'owners' threads for people actually possessing the item - the equipment threads here are probably ok as 'owners' threads but indeed, where there's a specialised topic related to a device, or unrelated, it can make it easier to find in a separate thread.

But in answer to the nub of the original question, which amounts to "can this device record from a tc gen same as any other audio device can' then I guess "yes" seems to be the answer.  The question is more a suggestion (and a handy one) rather than a question, perhaps.
