Title: Bit Torrent Firewall advice (Mac)
Post by: Mic D on April 26, 2013, 02:20:48 PM
I was wondering if any Mac people here could help me figure out my firewall settings on my Mac. I am currently running Vuze as my BT client. I'm just not sure where/how to set up my port settings. Thanks.

I run transmission on my mac and didn't need to make any changes to my mac firewall settings to get it to work.  It's generally your router that will need to have port forwarding/etc. configured to play nice with bittorrent.

You might want to start by downloading transmission and see if it helps?

Thanks. So you're saying a different bt client could help with my router? I can get torrents to work fine, I'm just not sure if my computer/router is set to optimal settings.

I'm still using the Azureus flavor of VUZE  but I think this would still apply...

It's been working for me quite well these past few years with the following ports directed to the torrent machine:
39286
13818
10739
When I first set the program up - I found those ports through various web postings.
In addition, some other bit torrent ports that are opened for bit torrent (although I don't know if these help Azureus/VUZE):
The range 6881 to 6999

What router are you using?

If your client and router both have UPnP (Universal Plug and Play) you shouldn't have to do anything other that make sure both items have UPnP enabled. They will talk to each other and figure out what to do.

I'm not on mac but that's a lot of ports open for torrents!  utorrnet uses one and it's recommended to do a random high port (not 6881 etc).
