Title: What pre amp(s) to match MC930 and 414EB?
Post by: Andersounds on May 21, 2013, 01:01:40 PM
Not sure what would be good pre's to match a pair of 414EB's and MC930's? Like the idea of a transformer loaded tinybox..

I won't be recording super loud stuff mainly rock gigs in smaller venues and acoustic stuff so noise floor/gain is important, eventually be good to comp the 930's and 414's in cardioid so far I prefer the sound of the 414's from using both pairs as drum overheads, the 930's sounded a bit bright on cymbals and lacked low end but I have yet to take the 930's out of the studio..

Going to order the ubiquitous M10 as my recorder, stealth isn't that important but I like smaller modular systems with long battery life.

oh and hi to the forum... :)

welcome, i don`t own either of the mics you listed. although i do have some of the newer 414`s and i can tell you they sound good with just about any pre but for louder souces a pre with a bit more transparecy might be good. i have a cooper that works well with the 414`s  so if your in the market for a pre let me know.

What's the "cooper" you speak of, not heard of one before.

Budget?

You'll get a lot of love from the Grace V3 here.

I ran my MC930's with the Naiant Tinybox and was happy. If you want a small rig, you're not going to get much smaller than that without getting smaller mics.

pretty sure he's talking about http://taperssection.com/index.php?topic=48970.0 There is one floating around here that had some of the chips taken out and replaced.

I ran a set of 930s for a while. The best thing I can suggest for concert taping is a brighter preamp with some sparkle, and baring that, a preamp that is cold and clean (like the Grace V series). A couple of folks recommended an old sonosax sx-m2 but I didn't like the resulting sound nearly as much and kept using the preamps on my 722 since they are bone cold and clean as glass (but not euphoric which was the one downside). In post production using plugins, I tended to favor an american (brighter) transformer modeling since they brightened up the soundstage and left a nice sparkle that complimented the 930s natural bump. Stay away from carnhill/neve transformer preamps, they are too dark and smooth for a set of mics that are already dark and smooth when field taping.

fwiw; I loved the 930s as overheads, I've been tempted to pick up another set just for drums but I don't spot drums enough to warrant the purchase for just that.

that is indeed the very cooper. however because it didn`t fit well in my bag with the xlr`s on the side i moved them to the back and removed the battery compartment.
