Hi
Just about to head off to Berlin to tape Depeche Mode.
I run two rigs these days, but yet to get a decent capture form my newest rig.
I run CA-14's > SP SPSB 10 > M10
I also use an Edirol R-09HR < SP SPSB 6 < AT853's
The Edirol is great letting you see how the levels are running. I pretty much always run that so it peaks at around 12dB on the display.
The M10 set up (and display) I find much more difficult.
The 3 recordings I have done so far on the M10 have all ran slightly hot. I think this is due to me setting the levels a little too hot....
That said, either I'm getting old or I'm finding that the display on the M10 is much more difficult to read and consequentially set the levels right.
Does this make sense to other M10 users? Basically I think the recordings are too hot as I'm not setting the levels right....how do you overcome this problem....the lower end of the display is much tinnier to read......any ideas thoughts or opinions welcome....

Try the rec level knob at 4 and check the green/red lights on the top front of the M10 as reference. You can then forget the levels on the display if you do not like them!

check to see what you are peeking at too
if you see the lights and are not coming near 0 then its not a m10
are you going line in?

Yep, running the BB through the line in on the M10......ran the same set up through the microphone jack, but that seems to peak much higher....
What I don't understand is that the red lights on the units aren't lit, but the rec still seems over loaded....
btw, perhaps by co-incedence just checked the record level dial....it is set to 4.

Is the REC LEVEL switch on the back set to "MANUAL" or "AUTO"?

Wouldn't hurt to replace the battery or batteries in the BB either. The battery power helps the mic withstand loud levels. When it starts to go bad, oh, you can hear it.
Otherwise, those mics and that level shouldn't give you a problem through Line-in. I use exactly that configuration a lot.

i'm going with this

def sounds like a battery issue powering the mics

I've decided to travel with one rig to Berlin and then look at a fix for the M10 when I return.
