Title: pops/clicks in recording
Post by: Ed. on March 29, 2004, 06:25:31 AM
saturday night my friends played this booty bar.  crazy setup, the vocals actually came from 4 overhead circles set up in a square around the dance floor.  the stage was setup up like L with the drummer on the side, and everyone else on the other.  the drums were mic'd instruments weren't.  i taped from a stripper cage on the side of the dance floor.  best thing ever.  i clamped onto the cage, it was great, no one could even get close to messing up the equipment.

i ran split omni's cuz i didn't really know how to get the vocals, instruments, and drums and the tapes came out smoking, well almost.  theres a bunch of little almost inaudible clicks on the recording.  i'm guessing its just the recording clipping but can't say for sure.  plus it doesn't sound like the recording is brickwalling at all.  however, i had the ua-5 knobs past 3 o'clock...and i've read bad things about that before.  i'm still listening to the show on the nomad, haven't transferred yet to see what the wav looks like.  i'm guessing i shouldn't turn up the ua-5 so far.

I'm down to my last 2 options. If neither work, laptop for sale or trade.

hmm, mines going into the nomad, i guess it could be a bad optical wire, i'll have to try that, i personally think its just cuz i had the levels up to high...i'll be taping wednesday night so i'll find out soon.  i should probably test it out before hand tho.

nope, it was optical...its not the normal stuff i got before when i ran analog.  I'm pretty sure its just clipping cuz i had the ua-5 turned up to high.  gonna try it when i get home from work tomorrow and see what i come up with.  hopefully i can figure out the problem then cuz i'll be taping wed, thur, and friday night.

But you have different opamps.

i take back the clipping statement, cuz i'm listening to the recording now again, and even in the quiet part there are little clicks...

hmm, cable or maybe i really do just have to format my drive everytime i go out.  this is about the 8th recording i have on the nomad...gonna have to go back and listen to the early ones.

it kinda sounds like i'm listening to an old record on a really old record player.

ok, i think its the format feature, i seriously do.  i'm listening to the first show i taped on the fresh drive, and theres nothing...looks like i'll just have to not be lazy and get shows off of it like i did before.

i formatted the drive...no pops, no clicks...seems like a silly reason for the recording to mess up, but if it fixes it, i guess i'll run with it.

I've had this problem once with my JB3 when the optical cable was not seated all the way into the JB3.  Since then, I've taped the optical securely into the JB3 and no further problems.

agreed on the cable vs. formatting or defragging the JB3.  I've only ever had clicks with the 1st cable I used, which didn't seat properly.  No problems now, even if I lose track of what's on the JB3 and record with a nearly full drive.

The old JB3 input jack problem...

I have never had a problem with cranking up my warm mod ua-5.  Wonder if some have different parts than others?  I was doing some test recording at home and had the warm mod cranked up at around 5 o'clock without any problems.

Again, you have different opamps.

That's what makes it different from the normal UA-5.  The op amps, among other things, are changed to give it a "warmer" sound.
