I'm going to be attending a gig next week, small-med sized (seated) hall venue, 800 capacity. My seat is 5th row from the front, not quite central, but not far off, slightly to the right of centre. Music will be fairly loud and amplified.
My question is should I go with card's or omni's? Whichever I use would be hat-mounted and >:D. My instinct is the omni's but something at the back of my mind is pushing me towards the cards, e.g. lots of talkers sat near to me which will be impossible to escape. I could run both but on this occasion I just want to keep it simple.
Any advice gratefully received!

Last Sunday eve I did record in a theatre with a capacity about 600 , located 6th row,not dead center but only a bit to the left...speakers where housed on each side of the stage( slighty tilted backwards)...used the Cards and came home with a at least for my ears very good recording....if you are not close to a stack I would use the cards being scared of talkers and clapping

That close I'd go with the omni's. I prefer cards farther back. Basically the farther away I get the more directional I like to go.

Hmmm tough choice! I would go with cards for fear of talkers but if there aren't any talkers, omnis would sound killer. Omnis would have more low end too, which could be good or bad!

Omnis. I recorded recently from that close up and chickened out for cards. My particular one had other issues (being a very quiet show) but I still wish I'd used omnis.

Thanks guys for all the replies. So omni's seems to be the favourite.
I have little idea how far the front row of seats are from the stage but I'm guessing less than 3m. So me 5 rows back I will be say 8m from stage/stacks. This is a good bit further than I am normally used to since I am usually either (a) humping the stacks; or (b) front of stage. Still omni's will be ok at this distance?

At that distance I would go with cards ;)

onmis if the talkers aren't an issue. however, it sounds like talkers are a potential concern... so go with the cards.

If it's music you care passionately about, hedge your bet and run both.

Just one of the reasons I love my 853 subcards. :)

I was at a silent acoustic sitting show (what is very rare to me). I like the result with omnis
ca-14 (omni) mics > ca-9200 (+30 db) > Tascam DR-2d (line in) [16bit, 44,1 khz]
(only I should have used mic in, I still didnt get used to that with Tascam DR-2d the result seems to be always quieter than with Edirol R-09HR)

Well I went with cards in the end, very pleased with the results. I could have gone omni though as the audience were extremely well behaved.
