Title: Sony PCM D50 not working properly (no levels)
Post by: yoclay on July 26, 2013, 06:48:06 AM
Hello,
Yesterday, my Sony PCM D50 suddenly stopped displaying levels and it appears that I can no longer record with either the internal microphones or the line in.  I have a display and full access to the menus, but no levels or recording indicator lights.  The recorder function works, but there is no signal recorded, only the noise floor of the recorder itself.
Any idea what this could be?

Thanks in advance.

I had this happen a few months ago with ONE channel on a Sony D1, Sony repair refused to look at it as "parts are no longer available," thanks Sony.  Paul at ProDigital found that it was an issue of a corroded switch and cleaned it up.  Not sure this could apply if you're using it regularly.  I was advised to switch mic/line and and back (the external slider) every once in a while to avoid problems on the D1, and I'm doing that now on the D50 as well.

Yep, looks like you are right on the mark.  Played with that switch and saw movement in the levels. Thanks for that!
Also noticed the batteries are being eaten up (new set in 20 minutes), so something is drawing all the power out.
Maybe the corrosion is shorting something or has spanned a connection.

Currently, in Paris, France right now, but maybe I can get this fixed when I am back in the States.
Any suggestions for a good repair service like Pro Digital in NYC or Pittsburgh?
