so, i'm setting up for ratdog friday night, when a buddy who was patching out asks what mics i am running. i told him i was running akg 460's with the ck63 hyper caps. he looks at the one mic and says it says cardiod on the cap.
i look and he's right, i almost flew the 460's with one hyper and one cardiod cap. i guess when i prepped my gear the night before i put the cardiod cap on by mistake. :P
i brought the other caps, and sure enough in the case, one card and one hyper. i quckly changed the card to a hyper cap, and all is well. ;D
anyone ever make this blunder and record? anyone ever do this on purpose? what would have been the outcome? ???
-
anyone ever make this blunder and record?
see Mike Falcon and %^& Morrison's tapes of wsp oak '02, one hyper one card, neumann km100 series
-
I almost did that the other night with my TLs...only one was card and one was fig 8. Fortunatly someone asked what polar patterns the mic had which reminded me to set them both to hyper. :P
I'd imagine this happens a lot with the LD mics with multiple patterns.
-
on a related note, at a show @ 930, i almost recorded with one u89 facing backward and the other forward.
-
nice...
I run fig 8's at everyshow just to prevent this sort of mishap ;)
-
i wonder what fig-8's DIN sound like?
i was looking at the mics and thinking "did that little neumann symbol fall off one of the mics?"
-
that's alright, apparently there was much confusion at a fall Phish show over which way the neumann logo was supposed to point and why there were two settings for "cardioid".
-
why there were two settings for "cardioid".
not an unreasonable question, to be fair.
-
no, not at all... but picturing Jason, Scott and John all standing around and scratching their heads over it makes me laugh ;D
-
^yeah, and i was there at Nassau too for the first night, so they shoulda known which they were facing!! :P
-
Ah, the "Ben Morrison Oak Mountain Hyper-Card mix". ;D
-
all things being equal...which would give the stronger signal? the card or hyper setting?
wondering if running a hyper and card would be advantageous in a venue where the section is on a severe SIDE of a venue...like far left and way back.
-
I'd guess card due to the natural rolloff tendencies of hyper patterns.
-
I almost did it once, but a friend did a split omni/card recording with the ADK TL's by accident. I hate admit it, but I once did a sweet fob Derek Trucks recording with Neumann tlm170s x/y cards with the mics facing back into the crowd - whooops. I always do a quick double check on the pattern switch to avoid such mishaps.
-
thats what i was thinking also.
hmm.. so if i am set up far left of stage, would it make sense to run a hyper toward the closer left stack, and a card toward the furthur right stack.
wait a minute, this is bullshit...i'm never gonna do this!

i ran one hyper and one omni, xy, with the cables switched l-r at nedfest last year. realized my mistake after the first band. sounds interesting.
