Title: How are the preamps on the dr680? how bout the A>D?
Post by: jerryfreak on July 29, 2013, 05:31:04 PM
took the plunge - proud new owner from sonic sense, hope to have it in action by hornings this weekend.

i wanted to hear experiences of those who have used this as a standalone without a separate pre or AD.

im using it with schoeps cmr>battery box, so not using internal phantom power

I've ran it a few times without a pre and been happy with the results.  I haven't had mine long, but I usually run a pre with the 680.

I have done both!!  I was running and Aerco MP-2 in front for a while and using the 680 AD.  Recently I've been running a V3 and using the V3's AD.  I have 2 friends that run a V2 into the 680 and they have been happy with the results.

Personally I'd run an external pre, but that could just be my preference in sound that I get from my gear selection.  I normally run a V2 and think it sounds more detailed and not as "muddy."  Well, not quite muddy, but compared to the V2 (which I supposed is could be considered a bright preamp) the 680 pres are definitely darker.

For Yonder yesterday my V2 battery cable crapped out after the first set, so the first set is AKG CK 1X > V2 > 680, second set is just AKG CK 1X > 680 if you want to take a gander at that and see if it helps at all.

I suppose this won't help that much when comparing sonic signature to Schoeps, but its something I suppose.
