Title: Newbie question: Soundboard Patch?
Post by: redpillbox on March 31, 2004, 05:04:46 PM
Sorry about the elementary questions boys and girls.  I've been lurking here for a couple weeks trying to pick up the lingo and what have you, but need some help...I have a dat with one 1/8" digitial in.  I would like to start by patching into soundboards of small local places just to get the feel for taping.  Assuming I obtain the patch to the soundboard:
1) What cords/adapters will I need to go from the SBD to the DAT?
2) Would I still need an A/D?
3) Does it matter that the cord will have to be 'adapted' down to a 1/8" digital in?  Will that compromise my sound capture?

That seems to cover it.  I realize these are big questions, perhaps, so thanks in advance for any help/advice you can provide.  Keep in mind I'm a newbie and may not be hip to all the common lingo.  ;)  Thanks a million.  Peace.

I'm guessing the 1/8" in is analog and not digital.  A variety of "Y" cables would do the trick.
xlr->1/8" and rca->1/8" should cover you in most cases.  An additional a/d won't be needed but also wouldn't hurt.

There are plenty here more versed in board patches than me so I'll let them chime in.

Welcome aboard! :)

It's an old AIWA...HD-S100. As you will see in the attached image it says Digital (but for all I know it isn't?)...thanks for the help guys.

Aiwa!  Well there you go!

For basic SBD recording, more than likely you'll need an RCA>1/8 Y adapter cable.  2x RCA plugs on one end (right and left) into 1x 1/8" plug on the other.

Another option the the XLR route.  Same cable, but it has female (outie with 3 holes, not inie with 3 prongs) XLR plugs on one end and 1/8" on the other.

I have a set of XLR>RCA cable with I can patch into my RCA>1/8" cable.  Lets me do either/or.

Plug this into the analog input on the DAT, the internal Analog>Digital convertor does the rest.

If you want to do a digital input on your DAT, you'll need an external AD convertor.  The AD20 is very popular, inexpensive, portable, battery powered, and uses 1/8" digital OUTPUT...  so you can buy a 1/8">1/8" cable and be set for external digi...  You still nedd the y cable to go SBD into the AD20 though...

Good luck!

Terry

That's what I get for assuming....it may well be 1/8" coax....like the out on an ad-20.

Again...I don't know a lot about board patches but I'm pretty sure you're unlikely to get a digital board patch.  I've been wrong so far in this thread so..........

Glad ya like my shaved pussy!  :P

Thanks for the help...so AIWA is bottom of the barrel huh?
Will this completely jack up the sound? (meaning: compromise the quality)

Thanks again.

i always thought the female was the inie and the male was the outie. kinda made it easy to keep track of which was which.

never mind, just realized your direction change.
