Yours sincerely.

Which would be "best" for loud recording is likely to be subjective. However, I have heard some good recordings with AT853s. You might try archive advanced search for those sources if you haven't yet for some samples.

I have AT853's and AT 943's. I like the 853's more, but are they"better" for loud shows" Hell, both will do the job.
-
I'm in the same boat as Marshall (have both, love both, but if only could have one would have 853's). I'd also recommend the 4.7k mod for loud rock shows (check out the yardsale, darktrain frequently has great deals on these).

I have used the 853s and the 943s and they are both fine, although the 943s are smaller and nicer :) The 4'7k mod is a MUST as Red says.

Thanks!

SP-CMC-8 (at 943) - smaller, great omni, somewhat tinny cardiod
SP-CMC-4 (at 853) - somewhat larger, great sounding cardiod, omni and subcardiod
SP-CMC-12 (at 350) - I don't know
Personally I'd go with the CMC-4, unless I only needed an omni in which case I'd take the CMC-8. The CMC-4 aren't that big.

I've recorded with / listened to recordings made with AT943 and AT853 cardioid mics, and my preference is also with the latter.
I also prefer Audio Technica's AT831 cardioid mics also to the AT943's. They're a budget mic that are often overlooked, and can shine in less optimal venues / locations.

The 943's are smaller but, assuming we are talking about cardioids, the 853's have better bass extension.
I would definitely go with the 853's. They are still easy to stealth with.

Just select the "low-sens" option when ordering the mics from Soundprofessionals. No need to mod them after that I guess...

^^^FYI, the low-sensitivity option and 4.7kOhm mod are the same thing.
The low-sens/4.7kOhm mod is specific to wiring for unbalanced two-wire output, such as when a pair are terminated to a stereo mini plug. It does not apply (and isn't needed) for 3-wire output, used with a 3-wire battery box or AT's PPA phantom adapters.
