Title: Issue with recording - need help suggestions
Post by: robotaper on December 09, 2013, 11:42:04 AM
This past month I've been running a microphone/pre combo I've not run in the past and have been having issues with the results.  I'm running Microtech Gefell M210>Little Box.  I've used two different recorders with the same result (Edirol R-09HR and Tascam Busman HDP2).  The issue is the recording sounds relatively ok except the bass is muddy or distorted at times - especially when the low end is heavy.  On the Little Box the levels are set at 11 o'clock (and I've tried it with the Output transformers on and off with the same result).  The HDP2 had the -20 pad on and the gain was set at ~6.  The levels on the recorder are just barely touching -3 db at the loudest points.

Again the bass is muddy and distorted through the whole of the recording.  When there's no bass, there's no distortion.

My thoughts are could the Little Box have blown transformers?  Or does this Mic/pre combo just not play well together?

No, that's just the way MGs sound :P ;D 8) JK of course ;)

Ummm, does your LB have output transformers? I haven't heard too many mg>LB(OT) sources I've really cared for. Seems to blow out the bottom end :( The LB(OT) sounds great with Schoeps/AKG/Busmans but I just don't think it's a great match with MG/Neumann/DPA. But that's just MY opinion ;)

Thanks for the input Brandon.

I've decided to send in the Little Box for testing.
