Title: How do you carry your smaller mics in your gear bag?
Post by: waltmon on February 21, 2014, 01:28:02 PM: Curious what solutions people have come up with. Ive used both a portable toothbrush holder with foam added to each eand as well as a zip up sunglass case.

Post by: mccordo on February 21, 2014, 02:40:19 PM: I've got a Pelican case with pick and pluck foam. The foam was picked to fit my (smaller) Audix M1280s, but is high enough in relation to the lid to hold my Busmans in place even though they don't actually 'nest' in the foam.

Post by: Gutbucket on February 21, 2014, 05:17:14 PM: A couple old M0k3 custom-sewn neoprene mic satchels. One is seamed down the middle to form two cushioned pockets, one for each mic with a velcro secured flap closure on the short open end, the other a larger one like a padded envelop with the flap on the long side into which the other fits for extra protection. Both made from fabric faced neoprene wetsuit material. Sometimes I split them up and use them seperately for multiple mics. They always make me smile, sort of like an heirloom quilt my grandmother made or something.

A 'pelican case' style water-tight cigar carrier is probably what I would use otherwise.

I keep my Beyer 800s in a hard shell eyeglass case. One mic in a small cloth bag and then the extra fabric wrapped around the second mic; then the glasses case is inserted in the small Beyer zipper bag that comes with the mics. Mics fit snugly in the glasses case, glasses case fits snugly in the zippered bag and the zippered bag then goes in one of the pockets of a Portabrace RM-multi on the recorder case. Chopped Naks will fit in the glasses case also but I have to pad the ends whereas full-sized Naks seldom leave the house. LDs require a different solution (and also a separate thread).

They hold those KM100's nice and snug. I bought 2 and cut reliefs in one for the active cables.

Exactly what I use, they are perfect. Water proof tough as hell, and look very clean, as well as keep dust out. Your mics will never break in them. They fit akg 460s busman bsc-1 and any mic in that length range.

So are there any official, if you are willing to pay the $$ solutions for carrying mics in small bags? What do boom operators keep their Schoeps CMC6/mk41 in when not running, for example? The wooden Schoeps box? Or is it assumed they have other bags with them accommodating bigger cases?

With all the bags and cases Porta Brace makes, I see nothing aimed at what we're discussing here. Why is that? Hobbyist tapers aren't a big market but I would think some pros would have similar needs at times.
