Title: mic stand?
Post by: harmon712 on March 06, 2014, 03:29:28 AM
What are some mic stands I should look into, just about all I need other than another xlr cable.  I have my friends Manfrotto 3373 I used once when using H4n built in mics.

I use K&M pro series - but all K&M stands are good.

Too many variables to give a good answer. Here are some questions to help narrow it down.

1. What are you recording?
2. Indoor or Outdoor?
3. Venue Size?

I use a 13 foot lighting stand for outdoor shows
I use 2) 18" stands when I record onstage
I use 1) 5' round base stand other times on stage
I use boom stands, round base stands and short stands when I multitrack

Brands? K&M, Manfrotto, Avenger, Atlas, Impact are places to look.
Photography lighting stands with the right adapters work well when you need to go tall.

I've been using a manfrotto 11 foot for 11 years. its duct taped paint chipped and ugly but it still works fine. It is great for most audience recording apps. However I am getting a superclamp/boom setup for from seat recording. The footprint of the manfrotto is a bit much for ppl to get around in the seats.

Mostly will be taping some friends bands at bars and a few other bigger venue shows and some festivals.  Venue size would be I guess a little of everything, more on the smaller venue size.

I bought something generic off of EBAY many years ago...  http://www.ebay.com/sch/Light-Stands-Booms-/88665/i.html

You can get one of these and then use an adapter or a clamp...  I've done both with my "Boss" stand...

What do you think of something like this?

There's no reason to buy a stand that expensive, check out B&H photo or sweetwater and you can find cheaper stands that will do the job; ebay will have deals too.

Less than 2 years ago, I got a http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/644444-REG/Manfrotto_1004BAC_Alu_Master_3_Riser.html for $89 and it is OK.  It is pretty sturdy with 12' height but wide base.  Hard to believe the cost went up about $30 since then.  Not sure why.

Similar mic stand is an Impact brand but cheaper that I think several people on here are using and have worked out.  However, you may get what you pay for.  Has good reviews on B&H.  http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/253066-REG/Impact_LS_13HB_Heavy_Duty_Light_Stand.html

i disagree to a point
I have seen many cheap stands bend or get dented easy where they wouldn't open/close
IMO spend money to get a solid stand where the tubing isn't thin junk

I use a CheetahStand C12 Heavy Duty Auto Light Stand ($119) with a Manfrotto Super Clamp with 036-14 Standard Stud. ($32) and a Manfrotto Black Triple Microphone Holder. ($93). yes it's expensive but it's built like a tank and that's what I like. Great for outdoors but a bit big for inside venues.

That's why I was thinking about the Manfrotto. Hopefully it's better quality and will last awhile.

K&M is the gold standard of stands.

K&M's build quality is superb.  I have a pair of low stands I use for on-stage (K&M 25950, I think) that are really solid, like nuclear bomb solid, and the knobs and other hardware are made well too.  I honestly think that someone tripping over one would be more likely to go down themselves than to knock over the stand.  They are heavy as hell, though.  I used to have a ~4+ meter stand of theirs that was also solid as a rock.  I am pretty sure that thing weighed over 20 pounds, though.  If weight is a concern (I usually take public transport to shows, so I'd rather not carry a 20 pound stand), make sure you check before you order...

You're not kidding.  Did a search for the K&M stands and they look to be built like tanks...  with a weight to match, lol.  Not cheap either, the least expensive one I found is nearly $150.

^^^ Nope!  Those small stands for on-stage weigh in at 2.98 kg each; I use them without the booms, which gets them down to about 2.4 kg.  So 4.8 kg for the pair.  The K&M stand I had (20811) weighs 9.94 kg.  By contrast, my current stand (Manfrotto 1004BAC) weighs 3 kg...Good stuff, though.

I have largely replaced the on-stage stands with a pair of Manfrotto 003s with 122B poles: about 0.8 kg each.  A lot easier on the rapidly aging knees and back!  The other nice thing with these is that I can use the 122Bs with a pair of SuperClamps for my dual-clamp-for-spacing-omnis setup.

Thanks for the stand info, I decided I'm going to go with a 10ft Impact stand instead of the Manfrotto and save money for shows and better taping gear.
