Title: mic stand
Post by: mmmatt on April 05, 2004, 08:15:39 PM
I'm looking to buy a mic stand and not sure what I should be looking for. As always, the $$$ matters, but I don't mind dropping a few bucks if it makes a difference in convience, size, or performance.  I know that many guys use light stands.  I currently have 2 "typical" mic boom stands that I have used to mic stages for my matrix setup, and have used one stand with the boom staight up (about 8' tall) for an xy setup in small clubs.  I have the big wu reunion comming up next month, and I'm pretty sure I'll need to get up in the air for the outdoor stuff.   I have KDTU comming up at the chicago house of blues in a couple of weeks.  If I want 1 stand to suit both a large/medium club, and an outdoor event, what should I be looking for, and what should I avoid.  Also, anyone who has experience taping at the Chicago HOB who could clue me in on general taping info for that venue would be great.

Thanx in advance!!
Matt

Check out the Impact light stands @ B&H photo/video. Quality stands, that are pretty cheap in comparison to Bogen (sp?)

Another option here:

Mine came to ~$55 shipped. 13' high, folds to 44"

The seller was J&K Group.

That looks nice, def in the price range, but it seems to have a rather large footprint.  Will this be a disadvantage in an indoor setting?  Size seems good.

I have the same one.  How do you get it to stand up with a 24" footprint?

mike;

i should have said "approximately 24 inches", since i just eye-balled the measurement on mine.

see the bottom-most turn knob (which is located at the bottom of the main post)?

you can slide that all the way up to meet the junction of the 3 legs, which will pull in the 3 feet.

I picked up one of these for only $27 (about $40 with shipping and handling).  It's only 9' but it seems pretty nice.

Thoes all look great for outdoor, but with the extreem angle of the feet to the floor, can you still duct tape them down?  My cheezy boom stand has feet that are almost flush to the ground and it tapes down real easily and securely.  Maybe I'm looking at it all wrong, but it seems to me it would be tough to secure it, and easy for someone to trip over.

Has anyone ever used a typical mic stand with a pole extension such as this one http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=productlist&A=details&Q=&sku=5364&is=REG
May be too flimsy for outdoor, and I'm not sure how it would attach to my present stand... seems to be a knob at the bottom...

It would probably just take some sort of adapter. I don't know the size, but take it into your local camera or music store and they could help you out.
