Title: dat to computer help needed~
Post by: Pelican on April 05, 2004, 10:54:32 PM
ok, the time has come for me to transfer my precious dats onto computer.  the computer in question has a crummy soundcard, so i believe i'll need to buy one and connect it to the cpu via usb.  what's the most cost effective way to do this?

in other words, on one side of the chasm, i've my dat, and on the other end, the computer.  what's the best bridge i can build between the two on a budget?

also, i assume i'll have to finally buy one of those pesky 7-pins.  i'm about to head over to the yardsale but it can't hurt to ask, is anyone here selling one?

thanks for your help :)

audiophile 2496 can find them for 150 on ebay or maybe cheaper then run coax from you dat to the soundcard.

bless you for such quick reply ;)

actually, after googling it, i've another question.  it's not my computer i'm dumping these dats onto so i'll not be able to actually install a soundcard "into" the computer.  would i be able to connect the audiophile externally into the computer, via usb for example?

in other words, i *can* install a driver, but i can't open the computer up and put the soundcard in there.  is the 2496 still a viable option?

thanks,
d

Well that makes things a tad more complicated but I believe you can get a USB version of the 2496.  I'm sure there are cheaper bit perfect cards out there too.

i was reading about something called the m-audio transit.  anyone here use this.  my dat recordings are 48k so i assume i need to make sure whatever bridge i use between the cpu and the dat is capable of handling this.

any more help would be warmly welcomed.  i'm going to be transferring the dats this week and want to make the wisest purchase possible.

thanks,
d

You might try the edirol ua-1d.  It is *NOT* bit perfect but in the many recordings I transfered it never gave me any trouble.

every recording i made w/ that thing has at least ONE pop/click in it, and i tweaked my comp the best to my knowledge, so id look else, but YMMV
