Here's a series of YouTube videos about microphone design. I don't know if anyone has posted these before but there is a pretty good explanation about how they get the various patterns.

Thanks. I was just looking at some of his soldering videos earlier today. These mic design vids explain how the patterns are derived in a way I found easy to understand. I watched a couple others too. I'm feeling motivated to build a simple mic and preamp.
