Title: best way to stealth with AT853s?
Post by: manida on May 29, 2014, 11:35:54 AM
Ive never really stealth taped, but Greensky is coming to the zoo in Albuquerque on 8/1 and Im pretty sure I wont get in the gate with my full bag of gear.  Now, my setup will essentially fit in a shirt pocket, just wondering about mic placement....??

Just clip your mics to Paul Hoffman's beard!  It's the best way to get crisp mando sound and his vocals.  I've done it before and he's totally cool with it.

I thought Greensky allowed taping. Has there been a policy change?

Yes, Greensky does allow taping (Ive taped them) but Im pretty sure the venue isnt cool with it.  It'll be a huge (Zoo Summer Concert series = huge) show and I seriously doubt the band will relay the message to the staff that taping is allowed.

My general experience in places like this (where concerts aren't the norm), is that the staff is completely clueless about taping. This CAN be used to your advantage as they likely aren't even looking for you. I've strolled right into places like this for bands that either don't allow recording or are borderline with my full rig...no issues. I'm going to assume that the staff saw me and just thought I was with the band. Occasionally I've even had someone come up to me and ask if I was with the band and said, yes and they left me alone after that (although in that case I knew the band members well).

Even if you do get shut down at the door a polite, "can you please ask the band/manager if it's okay, they normally are fine with recording" goes a long way.

I don't recall, but maybe someone here has a connection with the band and they can relay your request to them in advance.

Nice! I used a similar setup for a show at JazzFest this year with my CA-11s. (The hat wasn't covering anything up...it was just hot so I took it off and rested it on my backpack.)
