Title: Petrol 602 or 603?
Post by: Cobiwan on July 17, 2014, 04:07:19 AM
I'm trying to decide which is right for me. Judging by my signature would I better off with a 602 (large)
or a 603 (extra large)?  I've got a double Tekkeon, a 6v Eco charge and 4 Lenmar DVD batteries to put in with the rest of mounts, cables, etc. I'm leaning towards the 603 but don't want a bag that's too big for what I've got.
Thanks for your help!
Coby

I have a 603 and have found a way to use every part of this bag and was happy to have made the choice over the 602.  Wouldn't mind having a 602 as well, but size is no longer an issue on my part, as I have in "golfing" terms, a "Sunday Bag" for those dressed down recording situations as to which I really do not need to bring the kitchen sink with me.

I love my 603. It fits a lot of gear. I use it if I'm running multiple channels.

It's better to have a bit of extra room than buy an expensive bag and need more room.

I went with the 602 but should have gone for the 603, I felt the same as you. I didn't want the bag to be "too big" but at this point a little extra room would have been appreciated.

thinking about treating myself to one.  not sure which as I just started researching.

I have the rig in my signature, the lc3 are in tech flex so a little bulkier than stock, mic bodies are in a cigar caddy, four dvd battery's, various clamps, patch cables etc.  I also have a ca11 > ca9100 > sony m10 now as well.

I have the 603, actually the older model, but the big one.  I absolutely love it.  The times when I think I should have gotten the 602 is at festivals where my campsite is a ways away and lugging that big ass bag around is heavy!  Especially when stashing a couple of flasks of bourbon in there.,

Marking thread. Thinking about the same thing.

I would like to have EVERYTHING I own in one bag for when the situation calls for all my gear, but at the same time I don't want to have a TON of extra space. I also want to make sure that if I get a wild hair up my ass and buy a V3 I can still fit it in there.

Seems like for what I have now the 602 would be fine, but if I add a preamp or another set of mics, or want to stuff some booze in the bag I'm not going to have enough room.

I checked both bags out at B+H.

I already feel like my nova 5 is heavy with everything in it.  looks like the 3 is double the weight of the nova 5 empty (6.5 vs 3.5).

It's the booze thing that kills me, that & switching to tubes, the extra battery now has to go in the old whiskey hiding spot. It's a trade off I guess but if I had my choice I would get the 603. The main reason I went with the 602 is for theater shows where I have to stuff everything on or under a seat, takes up a lot of room either way.

What is the difference? I apparently have a 602 (just checked my order from when I bought it in 2012).
I was thinking that the small one had only 2 "shelves" and the large has 3. But now I see that the 601 has 2 and the 602 and 603 both have 3 shelves.

I'm not really a fan of the one I have. It's huge and while it holds everything ok, it seems too bulky a lot of times. I took off the side pockets, but wish the front external pockets were removable. I like the Sonic Case design better.

As with most things in life it's just the few additional inches that matter....
The 603 is three shelves but a few inches wider & longer.  So if the 602 is too big for your needs then the 603 will be even worse. It's tough because I think they should have a size in between but it probably doesn't make economic sense for them to make another size that's just slightly larger. There's no doubt though, these bags are big & bulky.

has anyone moved from a nova 5 to a 602?  trying to compare specs but what I'm measuring on the nova 5 and what the official specs are seem to be a bit different   can anyone with a 602 measure the main area with shelves and the big pocket on the front?  do you think a small netbook would fit in the front pocket?

I know I could fit all my gear in the 602.  I need the r44 to not be too tight though since the power and the hold button are on the top I need to be able to access them.

where is the internal battery pocket?  is it big enough for dvd batterys?

also wondering on the 603 if the 17.7 inch "length" counts the detachable side pockets?

Sorry for all the questions!  Better to ask folks who've used these in the field than to rely on pics and specs online.

The front pocket is big but I doubt a netbook will fit, I don't  think the  pocket is tall enough, it's wide & deep though. The measurements are without the removable side pouches. Both my DVD batteries fit in the battery pocket, I have a Naztech & monster power runner in mine with room to spare. Hope thathelps.

When I first got the 603 602 I thought it was too big but after using it a few times I'm glad I did get it over the 601.  I run it without the side pockets.  The extra space under the recorder/preamps comes in handy and the footprint isn't that big.

Here's a pic of a Petrol PS602 bag I got a few months ago.  At first I was kind of bummed because I thought it was a bit too big but after using it a few times I don't really feel that way anymore.

Gordo, I just got the 602, and decided to swap out for the 603 w the 4 channels, the 602 will fit your gear perfect.
