what does everyone think,, UA-5 for $275 brand new, without any mods.. should i buy this
do i need to get any of the mods done or will it be ok not to?
ill be running AKG se300's ck91 > UA-5> sony D8
thanks

without the Digi-MOD you will not be able to use it with a D-8.
The non- Modded UA-5 does not work as a standalone pre-amp it REQUIRES a computer connected to the USB.
The Modded UA-5's DO NOT need a computer

Ahem. :P Check the Archival Information's UA-5 FAQ.

so i deff would need to mod this unit... or it will not work??
i thought you had to mod it to run into a computer not the dat?
-
Nope, you need to mod it to use without a computer, so unless you have a laptop to bring along with the D8, you will need to have it modded. It is possible to do this yourself using traderdave's instructions. It looks really easy but definitely requires a steady hand, plenty of soldering practice, and of course access to soldering gear. One option is to find a local electronics shop employee to do it after hours. And $275 new is not a good price. If you are dead set on doing this, you can get an unmodded one online for $240 new or less than that off ebay.

why pay $275 new for it when you can get a new digi mod one for $295?
-
thanks

wonder what it would take to do a mod thru the USB port. ie. some of the playstaion mods that no longer require adding chips and wires. Bet it would be easy to do, although my digi mod took longer to unscrew and rescrew the cover than to actually perform the mod.

You mean like some sort of plug you can put into the USB port so it passes the signal back? That could be an interesting idea....anyone else have any input as to whether something like that would work and easy to build/obtain?

Your better off looking for a used one on ebay because as soon as you mod it you void the warrenty. I got mine for $180 on ebay
