Title: JB3>DAT patch suggestings

I would like some advise on cables and 7pin splitter>optical input to patch my jb3 to dat. I would like to cover all possibilties to patch with so I well be ready in the tapers section with any Dat or mabey a laptop even.

well, buy a converter box, preferably a hosa box, buy a splitter for your coax, so your source will be

digi signal >> coax splitter >>jb3
                                          >>dat

that way you wont have to worry about it, and can also patch w/ ease!!especially from dat

Bean, What is better the Hosa 276 or 312? What kind of cable do you need from the converter>DAT and converter>JB3?

Are you trying to patch your NJB3 out of DATs/ADCs or trying to patch DATs out of your NJB3?

At any rate, the ODL-312 converts AES/EBU <-> optical.
The ODL-276 converts coax S/PDIF <-> optical.  

Most patch chains are coax S/PDIF, so the ODL-276 is the better choice for patching.

Patching OUT OF the NJB3

If you're running analog-in to your NJB3, there's no way to have DATs patch out of you digitally.

If you're running digital-in to your NJB3, it depends on the format output from your ADC.  If coax S/PDIF, use a barrel splitter to split the signal - one side to your ODL-276, the other side output to patchers.

Patching IN TO the NJB3

Use the barrel splitter just as above - coax S/PDIF patch signal into the splitter, then output of the splitter one side to your ODL-276, the other to the next device in the chain.

Sorry I was'nt clear on this, but it looks like the 276 is what I want. My second thing is the DAT you patch out of well it have a 7 pin or what? I don't see what kind of cable goes from DAT>276>JB3. I just want to know all that I need to patch from a DAT no matter what the circumstance is: converter, cables, spliiter etc.

If a DAT taper is giving out patches, they'll have an 7-pin cable.  It'd look like this:

DAT >
7-pin/coax output from DAT >

Then your stuff:

coax S/PDIF cable >
barrel splitter >
    (one end open for next patcher in chain)
    other end coax S/PDIF cable >
ODL-276 >
optical cable (toslink / mini connectors) >
NJB3

Where is a good place to buy  coax S/PDIF cable and barrel splitter and any other cable I might need to run from a 276 HOSA

A bit surprisingly, the Radio Shack coax cables and splitters are pretty good and easily found.  For optical cables, check the Archival Info forum.   :)

Can you patch JB3>JB3 thru a 4pin cable (other side of firewall cable) and if not, how do you patch and keep a digital signal out>in.

Nope, can't patch JB3 > JB3, though you can transfer JB3 > JB3 after the fact using a 4-pin cable.

Digital patch chains using NJB3, already covered:  "Use the barrel splitter just as above - coax S/PDIF patch signal into the splitter, then output of the splitter one side to your ODL-276, the other to the next device in the chain."

Thanks, but I don't get it being the JB3 has 3 outputs(1/8 mini plugs) and 1 optical input. Please help me see the light.

The JB3 lacks a direct digital out. So if you are the one with the mics and they are going directly into the JB3 using the internal preamp, the only patch you could give is an analog. If you are using an outboard preamp/AD Converter like the UA5 (in your case the AD-20)you could plug the optical out into your JB3 and run the coax out into a chain. If someone wanted to patch in, they would connect a splitter to the coax line coming out of the UA5 AD-20. One of the coax lines coming out of the splitter carries on the signal, the other is plugged into the HOSA box. The optical output of the HOSA goes into the other JB3.

If you are only patching and have a JB3 + Hosa and another patcher has a dat+7pin, the coax line of the chain goes into a barrel splitter. One line out of the splitter goes into the coax input of the 7 pin for the dat and the other line out of the splitter goes to the Hosa box which converts the signal to optical for your JB3.

The JB3 outs are all analog - there is no way to pass a digital signal OUT (I thought your original question asked about digital patches).  Running analog in to the NJB3, you're out of luck, no digital patches - period.  But running digital IN to the NJB3 you may be able to pass a digital patch using a splitter before the NJB3.

[SRC] is the original coax S/PDIF signal source
----- and | is the coax S/PDIF cable
==|== is the splitter, one output dropping down, the other passing to the right
! is the optical cable
[DFC] is the digital format converter (coax S/PDIF > optical)
[JB3] is, well...the JB3
[DEV] is the next device in the chain

You could replace [dev] with another splitter, but eventually (not sure how soon) the signal would be reduced in strength to the point that downstream devices wouldn't be able to lock onto the signal.

I am trying to price a setup like what you are talking about but I am having trouble finding a splitter.  In the FAQ it is described as a coax barrel splitter but when searching for that on google I don't have much luck.  

1.) So about how much do they cost? and what is a good term to use to search for one on google?

2.) In this setup I would also need to get the opitcal cable to go from the converter to the jb3 and the coax cable to go from the splitter to the converter....any other cables that I would need for this setup?

That's it.  Check the Archival Info forum for some populare optical cable options.
