Title: Interesting......
Post by: bluewingolive on January 23, 2015, 10:02:22 PM
No affiliation.  Not sure if someone already posted, maybe old news.  Just a talking point about something different.  Not sure applies to anything we do, maybe more studio oriented?  I'm sure someone will be along to "shoot 'em down."  Maybe run the at your local watering hole venue.

First heard about them from this review in TapeOp last year which was studio-oriented as all of their reviews are: http://www.tapeop.com/reviews/gear/102/red12/ (http://www.tapeop.com/reviews/gear/102/red12/)

Seems like just a gimmick though, and after reading what the builder has to say in the thread linked above, I'd be wary of them.

I think some of his newer products did incorporate better circuits.  He did start issuing caveats about SPL handling on the Red; I don't know if he ever went back and revised that circuit.  Based on rereading his FAQ now, I don't think so; it sounds like his is using maybe a low-sensitivity capsule in the Blue which gives him higher SPL handling, but his circuit could still be leaving 20dB on the table, and there's no sign that it was ever balanced.  Still no specification on the site.

Well, I tried.  He probably sells more than me now so why listen to me?  I'm just another idiot on the internet.
Haha. You don't need a gimmick....well, maybe a pre in an Altoids tin??

Agreed that these do seem like a gimmick and there are better microphones to be had.  I also foresee it being an issue trying to bring them through airport security.  That said, I know the reviewer, Joel Hamilton, through this band called The Giraffes and he's a very good engineer.  While what we do is very different from being in the studio, and Joel used these mics in a specific application, I do respect his opinion.
