ok so if i press rec. on my sony D8, how come the tape does not roll?? the counter does not move eather? when i press play the tape move and counter works?

Hit pause>record>play and see what happens

nope... you have to press play and record. If you just press record, the level meter should move if its getting a signal, but the tape wont.
