Title: Quick question on Marantz PMD661
Post by: down2earthlandscaper on April 28, 2015, 11:24:03 AM
Taking the Marantz out for it's fourth or fifth run this evening for Drive by Truckers. I've always just used the xlr inputs, but was thinking about trying the 1/8" "Line In 2" jack so I can run mics through my Tinybox.
Does anyone have experience using the Line In 2? Will it bypass the Marantz preamps? Is this even a good idea, or will I be better off just using the xlr inputs?

Not sure if it does truely bypass the 661 preamps, but I would think so.
I've ran a preamp into mini input (Line 2) without problem...  and it does great IMO.
Just make sure you set your menu settings properly.

The line inputs on consumer recording equipment (if it also has mike inputs) generally do NOT bypass the first-stage amplifier. Instead, the feedback around that stage is set higher so that the gain of the stage is lower. This results in a simpler, less expensive, more reliable input circuit.

I asked Doug Oade if the concert mod on the 661 applied to any other inputs and he said no. I would think Chris at Busman would know also. I think he had a 660 last time I saw him.
