I am looking to get back into the taping scene by taping Garbage in Nevada in October....I've been out of the scene a while and sold my gear off and I am looking to get back. I have narrowed it to the two above in the title. My concern on the TASCAM is the fact that while it has built in MICS how would I go about hiding it and still getting solid sound? Are there stealth mics I can buy which will plug into the TASCAM? Same question with the PCM-M10.
Any help would be extremely appreciated :)

I don't have an M10, but as far as I know it has a 1/8" TRS stereo jack for external mics.
The DR-40 has a pair of combined XLR/TRS jacks to which you can connect external mics, they
can supply 48v phantom power, but not 5V Plug-in power, so to use small stealth mics. you
would need a battery box to provide the power.
If you intend using high quality professional condenser mics that require 48V power, then the
DR-40 is a good choice, it runs for about 5 hours with 2 Phantom powered mics, on 2300 mA/Hour
rechargable batteries, and about 12 Hours with Phantom Power switched off

The M10 has an 1/8" powered mic in jack, yes. But it's fairly low voltage power, so you'll really want a battery box for most mics and situations regardless.
The main selling point of the M10, in addition to being small and hardy, is that it runs approximately forever on a pair of AA batteries.

The M10 is smaller and runs forever on a couple of AA batteries. 1/8 TRS inputs only. Great for running external mics with a battery box or phantom powered preamp.
The DR-40 takes 4 AA batteries and doesn't last as long but does give you a better upgrade path with XLR/TRS combo jacks and phantom power. The internal mics are just so-so but you can run them and a line in to the XLR/TRS for a four channel recording. It will also "dual record" which is making two recordings, one at a lower gain, in case you run the levels too hot. Pretty handy actually. I own two DR-40s now. Its a solid recorder but so is the M10, just a different feature set.
BTW, I scared the shit out of a woman at an indoor concert when I pulled out my DR-40. She thought it was a stun gun.

I don't know why, but I RFLOL'd at this. I guess so many times being asked, with mics on stands, "hey, are you recording this?". Never been asked if the rig was a weapon though! :o

That was at a festival inside a casino in Las Vegas. Since I was flying in I just took the DR-40 and a gorilla pod. At that stage I was wrapping the gorilla pod through the top of the chair in front of me. It worked ok but the room sound sucked. At another stage I just set the rig on top of a table and it worked much better than I thought it would. The internal mics aren't all that bad!
