Last night I taped Galactic. The source was approximately:
Neumann KM40s (actives)>V-3>D-8>PCMM1>DA-P1
Anyway, it was noticed that my levels were running on average 3 to 4 db higher than the other two decks. One would think this should not be an issue with a digital signal. Any ideas?

i believe it is because the p1 has a more accurate representation in their meters than the m1 or d8 do. It is difficult (for me anyways) to tell if it hitting at 12 or 15 on my d8, that is just my opinion

might wanna try it with the M1 at the end of the digital chain... ???

sony DAT's are showing you analog levels, not digital, the p1 is showing you digital, trying to remember the difference.
-
you sure that the dap1 shows digital levels? I'd be suprised if that was true...
don't bother looking at the deck's levels, check the V3 levels...
-
I would think the DAP1 would have to be showing digital levels since the V3 in front it of has already converted the analog signal to a digital signal before it even reaches the DAP1, so the only signal the DAP1 could register would be a digital signal

What you said makes sense but that is not how the lcd readout is wired.
I need an engineer to come in and explain it but the levels are not based on the digital signal coming in, at least not in the Sony decks and from what I've heard about the Tascam as well.

for what its worth, I recall that I have an electronics manual that has a digital/analog conversion table or something like that shows difference between how analog and digital levels read, its analogous to farenheight and celcius temperature comparison, I would be happy to copy and mail this chart to anyone who wants it, pm me if interested

Ok, new piece of information. I have dropped my DAT copy and the DAT copy of the M1 on my harddrive. My copy clips but the M1 copy does not. Could my deck somehow amp the signal? This should not be a problem with a digital signal but maybe it is something my deck is doing.
