Title: Shock mounts and bass?
Post by: Sloan Simpson on April 19, 2004, 11:28:04 PM
So I've never run shock-mounts.  Sometimes I'm unhappy with too much/boomy low-end, and am wondering how much effect using shock-mounts would have on that?

I'm running Neumann SKM-184> V2> M1 or DA-P1, clubs, mostly xy lately, always up close. . .

Zero.

Mounts would help with the occasional wookie-bonk, if you go to shows where that can happen.

That's what I was thinking.  I'd read somewhere before that vibrations from going shock-mount-less can affect the low end negatively, but . . . Just some things going through my mind in the middle of the night.

Most of the shows I go to have hipsters rather than wooks, but the effect is the same  ;D  Actually one of the clubs I tape at frequently you just have to resign yourself to people bumping your stand, due to the way the club's set up, and I've never actually heard one of those bumps on the tape. . .

bull crap, my mics are a totally new mic WITH mounts, thats for sure

if your unsure, i may be unloading my sambras soon when i get the shures i want, you will notice a diff

some ppl love my tapes before the mounts, if your in a position where the bass can be too much, it will be, and i usually hate the tapes others love of mine, because theyre too bass heavy, not too much bass, but bass heavy, focusing on nothing but baSS AND working around that

i think a huge diff is noticeable, def depending on playback too

but YMMV

bull crap

+T for saying bull crap, I haven't heard that in 20 years!!

But now that we've got two differing opinions, let's hear some more . . .

You may try moving your stand back some.  Every room, band, pa, and soundman is different.  If the band has a loud stage volume (especially the bass player in this case), then the soundman is pulling a lot of that OUT of the pa because there is already so much comming right from the stage.  Pulling back may get you less of the instrument speakers, more off the pa, and  better results. At least something to try.

It's not usually the bass player, rather the bass drum most of the time.  But generally I'm in rooms that are sketchy soundwise, so the position I'm in is sort of dictated by reflections, etc.  (i.e. after experimenting a bunch in these handful of rooms, overall I like the places I'm taping from).  I sometimes will use the HPF on the V2, or tweak it in post, but if the shocks were to help tighten it up that would be a good thing. . .

shocks helped me 'tighten" my sound a bit

A buddy who doesn't tape nearly as much as me runs a pair of "tensi-mount" shocks that he said were pretty cheap, so I guess I need to borrow those for a show and see what happens. . .

Thanks y'all

Unless your mics are super loose in their clips, how would shock mounts help 'tighten' up your bass response? That just doesn't make sense...

Edit: Didn't see the theory above about bass traveling up a stand, etc. I suppose that seems plausable but if the bass is heavy enough to make your stand vibrate wouldn't your mics be vibrating the same, regardless if they're in mounts or not?

your still going to get vibrations, because bass is pretty hardcore on the technical end, meaning its pretty powerful

the shocks just help 'isolate' the bass by about 15-20db, some vibrations are still hitting the mic, it is just a lower amount by about 15db's

Sounds like just enough to fix the problem I'm having actually. . .
