alright guyz, i cannot totally get my xp pro to stay installed, after 30 days, i have to reinstall the fuggin thing
i would like to install windows 2kpro on the machine now, since xp pro is a bitch unless you purchase it(which i eventually will)
but its saying that i cannot move to a lower version of windows w/ the bootable disc i have for 2kpro, so what to do???
i tried to format my c drive and wipe windows off since all my data is on a d drive, but to no avail, it wont let me
so id really like to boot windows 2kpro form the disc and have that on my comp instead of xp pro, any suggestions??
thanks a TON guyz,
bean

you can locate a win98 boot disk at bootdisk.com. boot from the disk. you then need to fdisk the c: drive. i cant be sure you wont lose your d: drive though. good luck.

thanks, but why would i need a 98 bootdisk when i wanna install 2000pro???
i am totally clueless on anything but xp
any help appreciated
-
If you boot from your 2000 CD it should let you delete the partition & recreate it... Is the message saying it won't let you downgrade appearing while you're still in XP?
A Win9x bootdisk would also work, and as long as you select the correct drive the data on your D: should be safe.

because there is a command only on win98 boot disk that will allow you to nuke a drive. once its gone install 2kpro. trust me.

i will trust you bro, just makin sure it wasnt a brainfart and you wrote 98 but meant 2000
thanks guyz
mirth-yeah, it wont let me 'downgrade' from xp....

Try booting directly off the 2000 CD. It should work
-
i tried it already, it just pops that downgrade thing up, and then when i try anyway, none of the buttons on the 2000 cd will work
also, do i need a DOS or what kind of boot disk???
i wont be trying this till i clear my d drive just in case, even tho ive installed windows about 20 times;-)

thanks bro, +T
so i can just save that on my d drive, then when im ready to do it, just save it on a floppy???
then restart my comp w/ it in right??
-
bakatya. if that dont work ill eat my certs and my shorts.
-
If you're getting a popup window then you're not booting off the CD.
Leave the disc in the drive & restart the computer.
-
thanks guyz, im trying it now, fuck it........
im just worried about my d drive, but i'll check it out....

If you're getting a popup window then you're not booting off the CD.
Leave the disc in the drive & restart the computer.
also to furthur what he said, your BIOS may not be booting from cd first. check that. i dont know why i just now thought of this, but either way should work.
-
No worries Bean. It'll only format what you tell it to...
Also, what Dre said about your BIOS is true.
-
i dunno how to check my BIOS guyz....
also, i tried it once already, it asked if i wanted to accept the cd rom under #1, or if i didnt want to recognize it on #2, i chose to recognize it, then it said i didnt have any FAT or FAT32 partitions on my c drive, i was like wtf, its NTFS file system for windows, but let it load w/ out hitting anything and then
A:|| or something like that
when i hit a button, enter i believe, it said it was reading drive d, 'abort, retry or fail?'
so thats when i didnt know what else to doa nd nothing i did werked and shut her down
-
should i do this in 'safe mode'??
-
to check your bios: when you boot up it will say how to really fast (as in dont blink) usaully (tab, ctrl, f?, etc. once your in bios look for boot options. set your floppy 1st, cd 2nd, hdd 3rd, and so on. now boot from the 98 floppy. at the a prompt (a:) type>>>> fdisk c:. it should something like this:
a:/fdisk c:
then follow the steps it gives you.
this should keep you busy for a while. j/k
-
you dont need safe mode yet.
-
When trying to boot from the CD make sure there's no floppy in the drive as your system is likely set up to try to boot your A drive first.
-
so i should boot from the floppy first or the cd first???
-
CD
-
You shouldn't need the floppy
-
i thought i did, since that was the 98 boot disk???
i confuse easily, sorry
-
:coolguy: what he said.
-
+T darkstarjwedi, i will be sure to let ya know how i did when i do this
-
Right click My Computer, Manage, Disk Manager.

*Don't do* what I did and just try to upgrade/downgrade. I lost a lot of stuff that wasn't backed up when my Win2k installation went into some futile loop and wouldn't let me back into my WIN98 files.
...Kk <~~noob
so youre saying to reinstall completely, delete the old partition, and create a new one right??
-
yes, yes, and yes ;)
