OK,
here's the deal:
I am looking for a bit perfect laptop interface. I want it to do at least 24/96, prefferably up to 24/192. I'd like it not to break the bank. It needs to work with OSX (panther) and spark. Ideally its not something huge, but that fits nicely in my bag.
Throw me some options. seeing if there is anything im not thinking of.

ECHO Layla - pcmcia interface. 24/96 @ $800 (?bit perfect?)
M-Audio Firewire Audiophile. 24/96 @ 350 (?bit perfect? - pci interface is)
M-Audio Firewire 410. 24/96 @ 400 (?bit perfect?)
Ego Systems Quatafire 610 - firewire. 24/192 @ $500 (?bit perfect?)
Digigram VxPocket V2 - pcmcia. 24/48 @ $450 (bit perfect)
these were the cheaper ones I could find. only one that I KNOW to be bit-perfect is the VxPocket V2, but thats only 24/48.
the MOTU 828mkii is 24/96, firewire, rack mountable or standalone @ $750
-
im gonna look into the ego systems, thanks luvlean.
-
well knock that out- no osx drivers.
-
oh and the echo layla isnt bit perfect and i believe it only takes an analog in
-
thats why I put the "?bit perfect?"...wasnt sure.
looked at the Aardvark stuff, but they are pci only.
other than the Quatafire, everything for a laptop was 24/96 max...except the MOTU 896HD which does 24/192, but its 2RU and $1200!
-
looks like im settling for 24/96, which in reality isnt much of a settle at all, just wish i could be doing 24/192 and maxing that v3 out. thanks man +T

Firewire410! Do it, it's awesome. ;D
-
who has the best price on the 410, also is it powerable off a 6v? im gonna be running a v3 and would like to only have to have one battery with me.
-
www.digitalproaudio.com sells them for $325, I haven't found them cheaper anywhere else.
And they're 12v.
-
hows the drain on those. i guess i can always get one of those joined eco charge bats.
-
Dunno, I power it from the firewire bus. I use an NCharge with the iBook to keep it running for around 4.5-5 hours with phantom power on.
-
wait, can it be self powered from the firewire bus?
-
yeah, the M-Audio units can be bus powered
-

im really worried about pushing 24/96 over usb. i know it can be done but it can be troublesome. i know that firewire can handle it for sure no problem.
-
you may want to grab the Firewire Audiophile unless you need the pres. . .

Jonny, I've used the emi 2|6 for a while and have never had a problem with 24/96. Every time I've seen someone with issues they've been running a PC.
-
but did you get 24/96 on the emi under os x or 9? his powerbook can't run 9...

Both. Although I haven't touched 9 in a long time now.
-
yah i will NOT touch 9. not to save my life.
-
your machine can't boot into 9, so don't worry :)
did emagic fix the issues the emi 2|6 had in 24 bit in os x? when i had mine it wouldn't work.
-
the 410 can only be bus powered IF you have the full sized firewire bus on your lappy, i have the ?4-pin?, so il have to get external power when i buy one this week
-
i have the fullsized firewire port on my g4. and yes scott, i believe i can boot in 9, but im not trying it :-)
