what's everybody's opinion w/ running non-coincident patterns w/ LD mics? i know doug oade recommends running xy w/ them....just curious why. i've only ran xy w/ my TL's and was thinking of trying diff. patterns (as soon as i get my rig built back up or when i can borrow someones gear ;) ). just curious as to what patterns everybody else is running.

I recorded my buddy's band using DIN the other evening... it sounds spectacular. There was more 'boom' than when I recorded them before, but it actually was excellent in the recording.
I'll admit though, I usually run XY because it cuts boominess... I haven't tried running DIN for louder stuff in small room though. I will tomorrow though!

The reason to run LD mics coincident is to produce a cleaner (in phase) image. ya they sound good DIN but w/ LD's the overall image is more focused when run coincident. It can be hard to align the caps. The best way is to look inside the screens (use a flashlight if you have to) and see where the capsules are physically located and THEN make sure the are aligned to each other. This way you get the cleanest/most focused acoustical image possible.
Hope this helps

Try it all....... nice mics make nice recordings (generally) ;D
It's great to get opinions and then try it out for yourself (one each set) to see if you like chocolate or not.... likewise get some recording of each from others to see what they are referring to.....it's all good.
have fun

Yeah... as I have mentioned, I have almost exclusively used XY, because I thought it was the safest way to go... but I just did a few DIN recordings for the first time, and both of them sound really, really good...
I might have found a new favorite configuration! I am going to see how ORTF sounds next!
+ts around!

i'll probably try xy one set and din second set. i loved din w/ my old SD mics, hopefully it'll sound as good w/ my TL's!

i run cards DINA all the time. blumlein is real nice to onstage. dammit still haven't run the omnis yet! ;D can't wait to run them this summer gonna try it all if i can....spaced, healy, j-disc.

I 2nd jones to try them omni....,....

i tend to really dislike xy recordings, no soundstage at all and very flat sounding to me, IMO(w/ the exception of mark s and some of his recordings-150's)
but DIN and ortf really shine w/ the 480's, also, IMO, thats the only way to run em
i did a set for set comp at moe 4/4/03 and the DIn just smashes the xy to bits

Even with LDs, bean?

well, i must say, i havent heard many LD mics xy, but i have plenty of u89 tapes DIn from sections even that are really nice, but i bet they would sound better xy than a SD 8)
also, adk tl's sound good DIN from the section too
really nice soundstage DIN, that usually does it for me
