Title: FOB w/ normal mics
Post by: rowjimmytour on April 28, 2004, 11:04:26 PM
I've seen folks stealth FOB w/ normal mics on the floor hangin' out of a bag. I was just wonderin' what kind of sound one might get w/ a set up like this and would'nt it sound better if you held the mics in your hand. By the way these shows were @ taper friendly shows like ( Phil&friends, SCI, KW). I was only askin' because I wanted to step up from my MD and get a better set up. I just purchased a JB3(extra battery) and plan on buyin' a AD-20 and some mics(mabey $300) tops if I can afford it. I was just wonderin' if I would be better off buyin' something like SP CM-2 for less or buy AKG 1000's for more and use them FOB and on a stand.
Peace

note- there are some core sound cards in the yard sale...those will run you way under 300 and would be low low profile... :)

the c1000s are huge also, definantly not a best pick for FOB on a stand

I only was considerin' AKG 1000's because I found them new for around $299 free shippin' and I heard shows taped w/ 1000's and thought they sounded pretty good. I would love to hear advise on mics around this price range normal or stealth size doesn't matter what matters is sound. I only go to shows that are taper friendly so I have nothin' to hide. I am also considerin' a Hosa ODL-276 to patch off other tapers but I worry about findin' tapers to patch from at Keller William shows on the West coast down South (Santa Barbara area).

the c1000s are great mics for the price. i used them for a few shows before the upgrade bug bit

if you able to step up your price range, you might look into finding a set of akg 391's, they go about 450-500 used and are many levels above the c1000s

maybe look into some octava mc012's also, which can be had for very good prices unmatched

i just said that about the c1000s being big becuase compared to most of our SD mics that we run, the c1000s are 1.5- 2 times as big, and being FOB and in the sight line of people i would want something lower profile, but that is me

I ran C1k's way FOB twice, both at taper friendly shows though, w/no problems. That said, they would most def. not be my 1st(or even 2nd) choice. If you could score a pair of the older ones that are black instead of silver, that would be a liittle less obtrusive.

the black ones would be a little less abtrusive, and they are better mics also.. but those are few and far beetween from what ive seen

how much of a difference is there in beetween the 2, after the SP AT's have been "un"modded

none, except if you use samson branded modules you won't have the bass roll-off switch the AT brand has

yep

$170 for the SP mics + $70 in parts to do the mod yourself = a lot less than any dealer wants fopr a pair of AT853s
