Title: Looking for recommendations on MD recorder for live shows
Post by: jaronaz on May 01, 2004, 05:26:22 PM
Hey,
My band is looking to get an MD recorder to start taping more of our shows.  Just wondering which are good to use, and which to avoid.  Any help appreciated.

Thanks,
Jaron

If you're gonna go MD then stay with Sharp.  The levels can be adjusted on the fly. If you can swing it I'd go with the new Hi-MD, if you're taping from an analog source you have 90 min. of pcm wav with usb transfer.  not too shabby.

What are you taping out of? Your board? you can also go with a refurbished Nomad Jukebox 3 off ebay, $179 + shipping.  20 gig hard drive recorder with usb/firewire for transfers, no blank media hassle.

either will work for what it sounds like you're trying to do. feel free to post more questions.

Ya, if you can, go with a NJB3. If not, I had a Sharp MD-MT 180 that I really liked.

I'll agree that the best choice would probably be the Nomad.  It'll definitely be my next recording device unless something better comes around.

I'd suggest a sharp md480h...I've had only good experiences with mine.  You can record for 8 hours on 1 charge.  Supposedly has the best battery times for md's.  I don't believe theres any way at this time for a digital transfer with the Hi-MD's.

if the audio is recorded from an analog source than usb transfer is allowed.  if you record using the optical in then the files are locked and cannot be transferred via usb.

my vote is for the nomad which can be found on ebay for $179.  I would avoid MD at this point in time due to the transfer issues, which is ridiculous imho.  With the nomad, you record directly to the HD then you can transfer your recordings to a pc via firewire or usb within a matter of minutes.  Sure beats real-time transfers with MD or DAT.

I agree with getting the nomad. If I could do it over again, I would have bought a nomad. But I am satisfied with my Sharp MD-DR480H nonetheless.
